Clash of the Gods: Tolkein's monsters

Is on the History Channel International at 9:00 CST tonight.
Did anyone see it when it aired in October, is it worth watching?

What in the world is it supposed to be about? I mean, in a very loose sense you can call Gandalf and the Balrog “gods”, but only in a very loose sense, and I’m not sure what tenuous connection to history you can make with that. Or, alternately, if they’re dealing with historical mythology, I’m not sure what the tenuous connection to Tolkien would be.

Just by chance, I caught the second half of the repeat showing, in the early morning hours. The show traces some of the sources of The Hobbit & that big book published in three volumes. Gandalf as Odin the Wanderer or as the reborn Christ? Ancient tales of carnage & The Battle of the Somme. Various experts speak & scenes (from history or legend) are recreated. Is it “worth” seeing? I’ll definitely watch for a rerun to see the whole thing.

Now they’re doing Beowulf. With recreations of the story, plus the usual historical & archaeological bits. The series uses a slightly scattershot approach–which suits myth & legend just fine. There’s no Gospel, but many possible sources for the several versions many stories. Present them & let the intelligent viewer decide. Or continue investigating…
