Not you, my cultured friend. Your post was the first response and you were fully on board and relevant with my music appreciation essay. Thank you.
I remember that thread. Looking at it again, I see that I did contribute one post to the hijack. Sorry about that. Your original post was quite informative. I know very little about Russian classical music, except the standard list of Tchaikovsky’s greatest hits: Swan Lake, the 1812 Overture, the Nutcracker, etc. In particular, apart from the name, I know almost nothing about the Five, or the Mighty Handful, or whatever you want to call them.
More accurately, the “Mighty Three Plus Balakriev and Cui.”
Not just those:
Hot Diggity (Chabrier’s España).
Nature Boy is reminiscent of a piece by Dvorak that I can’t quite remember ![]()
Bernstein’s New York, New York from On The Town is pretty much the same theme as in Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet.
And also from Borodin via Kismet are Baubles, Bangles and Beads and And This Is My Beloved
And “Somewhere” from West Side Story is lifted directly from Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5.
I can’t hear the opening notes of Enter Sandman without thinking that the Yankees are about to win a game. There are other baseball closer songs but none so iconic. Maybe Wild Thing from Major League.
Similarly, when the first notes of Sweet Caroline start up I’m transported to Fenway park in the middle of the 8th inning. I love hearing Dirty Water since I associate it with the Red Sox winning, but that song has other positive connotations as well.
Negatively, I can’t hear Rock and Roll by Gary Glitter without associating it with his criminal history.
