Clean Public Restrooms

Where are the cleanest public bathrooms?

In my travels, I’d have to say in bookstores. They tend to be cleaner than any other public restroom.

In my experience, places that don’t sell food have the cleaner restrooms.

How about in your travels?

I agree. Every book store I’ve been in that offers a public restroom has a clean one. Usually department stores in malls are pretty good since most people use the mall restrooms. A study once showed that the first stall is usually the cleanest in nearly all restrooms since most people don’t like going into the first stall for some odd reason. I ALWAYS pick the first one if it’s available.

You mean there are places that clean their restrooms?

Actually, the cleanest ones I have seen are in (some, not all) resturants. Not fast food places <shudder>, but the sit-down kind. Around here, the Chili’s restroom is sparkling, while the Barnes & Noble restroom is positively frightening.

Department stores, especially the pricey ones are the best. They usually have pretty good changing tables, too. The Nordstrom in our local mall is clean, the changing table has a mattress, and there’s even a cushy nursing lounge. Can’t beat it!

The Atlanta Bread Company (I dunno if it’s a Southern thing or not–is it?) in my town always has the cleanest restrooms.

The one at the Monterey Plaza Hotel. An expensive hotel.

The Strand in NYC has the worst bathrooms
I’ve ever seen in my life (yes, I once
used the men’s room when the women’s was
out of order. They are single occupancy
with door locks). But since they sell
everything for 1/2 price or less, who cares?

The Barnes & Noble are great. Libraries too.

I did construction for a few years, and since I have all my teeth and speak multisyllabically, they wouldn’t allow me to use the porta potties.

In my experience, the Texacos and Conocos around KC and Overland Park have the BEST restrooms. Always sparkling, usually decorated, cleaned multiple times daily, and they’re SINGLE OCCUPANCY with loud fans (for those chili or burrito day afters). The one at Blue Ridge and State Line was INCREDIBLE!

Cleanest I’ve ever seen: in a building on a college campus that housed a specialized research institute: Professors’ offices mostly, and some laboratories. Undergraduates were almost never seen there. It was next door to the math building, so I went over there to pee.

There often seems to be a great deal of randomness in this, and I am still shocked by finding appalling stalls in posh hotels, restaurants, etc. (Not that I am often to be seen in posh hotels, restaurants, etc. )

But seriously, I think it depends more on the last people to have used the facilities and less so on the location itself. This means that the less frequented the toilet, the cleaner it is, although this should be obvious, and all other criteria are virtually unimportant.

I stopped at a Mobil gas station in Westwood (an upscale district in L.A.) to fill up. I go to Mobil stations all the time, and usually they all have the same stuff…except for this one. They had fresh cut flowers, wines (and expensive wines at that), and they had a mens room that was bigger and nicer than my living room. It had a floor-to-ceiling mirror and what looked to be Italian marble. The floor acually shined! The rich do live better than us poor folk.

The womens bathroom in the engineering building at school.
OH! The bathrooms at Lowes/Sony Theatres in New Brunswick. They even have a few leather couches in that one.

The Shell gas station on the Trans Canada Highway in Sicamous BC. The employees sign a plastic sheet on the wall with their name and date they last cleaned it…which is always the same day you use it.
I’ve had lunch in there.

Best restrooms are in the NewYork, NewYork casino in Las Vegas. I’ve never seen a more glamorous restroom in my life. Worst restrooms ever are at any given TGI Fridays. Doesn’t matter where, what time of week, month or year, old or new building. I’ve never been in a Fridays bathroom that didn’t look like a bomb just went off. I know the servers there are probably the most overworked ever, but man, someone has to go in sometimes and at LEAST put out TP!

hey, i once worked at a gas station where i had to clean public restrooms…I noticed that some people just get a lot of pleasure out of making one as filthy as possible.

Occasionaly somone would take a dump in the sink (gag!) or or even smear crap all over the walls (always happened in the ladies room)
or use the trash can if it were a toilet (also, always in the ladies room)

The dirter it got, the more Clorox i put into my top secret “cleaning solution” my goal was to make it smell as unpleasant as possible so assholes wouldnt take the time make a mess. I even mopped the walls with Clorox…stay in there longer than 2 miniutes and you’d be cross eyed.

Somthing that also realy pissed me about public restrooms. Often, I would see a customer (uasualy a woman) put the entire roll of tissue into her purse, and then walk up to the counter, and say “You know those restrooms are out of tissue!!!” After placing a new roll in the restroom, the same act would take place about 2 hours later. If you have to steal TP…you are either realy, realy poor, or realy realy greedy.

hope yall enjoyed my view of the restrooms from the station attendants point of view.
