Cleaning semiliquid cat shit out of a white carpet

Spot Shot is available in the cleaning supplies aisle of any supermarket around here. I’d assume it’s nationally distributed, but your mileage may vary. I’ve also got glowing praise for its ability to lift pet stains from carpets.

I have neither the money, inclination, time, nor patience to do this, especially if it’s a hypothetical. I’ve already had two extremely reputable veterinarians tell me that some cats simply have chronic digestive problems resulting in diarrhea, that the cat is otherwise perfectly healthy, and that there may be ways to control, but not eliminate, the diarrhea. As far as I can tell, there is no need for a third opinion.

As you can tell, I’ve already jumped through a number of hoops for this cat. My patience is wearing thin.

I think I’ll take the suggestions about the food bowl. They may just work. I’ll also stick a crinkly Wal-Mart bag back there (although one of my other cats loooooooves those things.)

Man, I hope this works.

Thanks. I’ll try to find some tonight.

Forgot this one. One is covered, and one is uncovered.

Well good luck Ogre I hope it works.

You are to be commended for your patience and kindness

Agreed. Having been a pet owner, and chased various 2nd and 3rd opinions for complaints such as this kitty has, you are only throwing money away after a certain point.

We have a dog with a sensitive tummy. Every now and then, he casually barfs on the floor, then goes about his happy doggy way. Every vet we’ve talked to thinks that this is a serious dangerous condition that must be treated and diagnosed immediately. 3 vets, and at least $2000 of diagnostic tests and medications later, my dog still barfs, and is still cute and happy. The vets still insist on exploring ever more obscure diagnoses (it has turned into an episode of House, for all intents. “Maybe he’s contracted Paraguan Legionairre’s disease, has your dog recently encountered any rare South American Expeditionary armies while digging in the back yard?”)

Know when to say when. We have now given the finger to the vets and diagnosed our dog with “sensitive tummy”. Everybody’s happy.

I second the Nature’s Miracle spot remover for getting the stains out – works great on catshit stains on my white carpet. The only problem is that now I need to shampoo my whole carpet, because the Nature’s Miracle cleans so well that those spots are cleaner than the rest of the carpet!

You can get their products at most pet stores. Their litter stink powder stuff is great, too.

My old cat had a favorite poo spot right beside my sofa. I scrubbed the stuff with Oxy Clean and some enzyme cleaner. There must have been a residual smell because she kept going there. I even pulled up the carpet and treated the pad, but the spot stayed her favorite. I tried a plastic bag. That worked great for every cat but mine. My weird cat wouldn’t poop on it, but it became her favorite thing to pee on. Cat pee is almost worse that semi-liquid shit (not as colorful, but much stinkier). What worked in that spot was clear vinyl. I got some clear place mats and put them over her spot. She wouldn’t go on that.

You may have already tried these, but on the off chance you haven’t, some litter suggestions you may want to experiment with:

  • Some cats like finer grain litter; some prefer the coarser stuff. Mine liked the finer stuff. She’d avoid the coarser stuff like it was made of broken glass.
  • Some cats won’t deal with scented litter.
  • Some cats don’t like clumping litter. Others will only use the clumping stuff
  • My cat required a very clean litter box. One turd was her max. So I had to scoop regularly.
  • My cat got scared off from her litter box in the laundry room by the sound of the machines. She was a very skittish cat. It was okay if the machines weren’t running, but yours may have had one scare and decided never to go back.

Since you have multiple cats, you may want to try different types of litter in different boxes in different locations (get a 3rd or 4th box if you have to–they don’t cost much) and see if there is any type she’ll use. It’s a hassle, but it’s better than dealing with poop on the rug.

Are you adding anything moist to her kibble? The food you mentioned sounds fine, but if you’re adding anything moist to it, that may be your problem.

Are the other cats bullying her at all? If they do, it may be that using the litterbox is when she feels vulnerable and she’s more secluded and safe feeling behind your computer.

How long has she been doing this? And how often do you scoop out the box? Some cats are extremely anal.

Are you feeding her any people food at all? Anyone else in the house who may be doing so? A friend’s cat was doing the same thing-turns out her sister was giving him milk, and they never cleaned out the litter box.

One thing that seems important is that she was using the box when she was by herself. If she made it to the litter box fine when she was isolated, it may be that she is frightened of the other cats or they are keeping her away from the litter boxes. I had a cat that started pooping in inappropriate places when we got a bigger, younger cat and that cat chased her away from “her” litter box. We gave her her own box and blocked the inappropriate areas, and soon she was back to regular habits.

I would suggest giving her a litter box of her own away from the other cats’ boxes, and after cleaning the “pooped” area to cover it with something like small empty boxes to keep her away. Show her where the new litter box is, scrape her paws in it, and hopefully she will use it once her old spot is blocked. Once she is in the habit of using her litter box and has forgotten about her old spot and is a bit more used to the other cats, you can move her litter box with the other cats’, and eventually get rid of it.

Have you considered buying a brown carpet instead of a white one?

Judging by his second post, you’d have to ask the landlord that question. And if semiliquid shit is anything at all like cat piss in its behavior, that stuff’ll go straight through the carpet, into the pad and down into the floorboards.

I had a cat once with chronic diarrhea who turned out to be allergic to Pine Sol; apparently this is common in cats. If you’re using anything pine scented, stop & see if it helps.

I also started feeding my cat with the jumpy tummy (the throw-up kitty) the Purina One for Sensitive Systems and it helped a lot.

Many cat experts recommend that you have at least as many litter boxes as cats.

This won’t fix the big picture, but you might want to put some cheap throw rugs down in the areas where Miss Poo Butt is taking a squat. Saves the carpeting and it’s easy enough to toss in the washer or garbage as appropriate.

As much as I love cats, I could not live with an untrainable one either. Maybe she could become a barn cat!

Since this thread has turned out to be far more of an advice thread than a rant, I’m moving this to IMHO.

This is by far the grossest and funniest thread title I have read in a long time. I was especially pleased to see it right about a more serious “Saddam’s Trial”.

A good laugh this morning.

Hope that cat is okay.
