Cleaning wallpaper with rye bread?

Is it true taht you can clean wallpaper by rubbing the soiled area with a slice of rye bread? I read this factoid, but I’ve been unable to verify it.

The explanation given: the rye gluten does something. Other types of bread allegedly won’t work.

Any truth to this?

Sorry. “Is it true that…”

I’ve seen this done on do-it-yourself shows, but it doesn’t matter what kind of bread you use. I’ve always seen them pull off the crust, wad the bread into a ball, and dab or rub the soiled area.

I don’t know if it works, but here are some websites that recommend it.

This ones says stale bread, any kind.

This one says rye bread, but FRESH.

Specifies white bread.

Another vote for fresh rye.

Specifies “two day old” white bread. That seems a little strict to me. My day and a half old bread won’t do?

Finally! This one specifies using “balled-up” bread. It’s a site called “man of the house” so I guess it has to be explained. We women are presumed to magically know to do this…
A reason to click on this link - there is a spooky menu on the left side that follows you as you scroll up and down the page!

And to wrap it up, here’s a site that makes fun of household tips like this. It’s fairly cute.
