I’m many, many hours into the game and am seriously confused. I just finished the part where the Master Chief boards the Prophet of Truth’s Ship (where Catona yells at you to ignore the flood) and am now back as the Arbiter.
Where’s what I don’t get:
1.) What the hell is the plant thing and how did it “use” the Master Chief?
2.) Why does the Arbiter keep telling other elites that the brutes murdered the council? I thought the council was composed of Prophets?
3.) The Prophets turn the Brutes against the Elites for what purpose? Seems like a stupid thing to do.
4.) From early on in the game, the Sergent makes a big speech about how the Earth’s defences can’t be penetrated. Next thing you know, the Prophet of Regret lands on Earth, WTF? Why did the prophet expect Earth to be empty?
Finally, does anyone else think that if the humans could produce a sniper rifle that held more than 4 bullets, a shot-gun for every soldier and a Scorpion for every platoon, that the Covenant wouldn’t stand a chance?
I was going to play back through on legendary and figure this out (I’m on Heroic now) but with a 2 month old son and Prince of Persia 2 still in the wrapper, I just don’t care anymore.
Oh and feel free to spoil the rest of the game for me if it’ll clear the plot up.
It uses MC and the Arbiter by getting them to do its dirty work for it - i.e. take out the covenant so that the flood can really get their thang going on.
2 + 3) the Council of Prophets doesn’t turn the Brutes against the Elites, they simply demote the Elites and promote the Brutes in their place because they percieve the Elites as having failed them - it would be like the Roman Emperor deciding that the Praetorian Guard weren’t doing a good enough job and demoting them back to being a regular legion, whilst promoting some other Legion up to the position of Emperor’s Bodyguard.
Of course, what they don’t realise until too late is the fact that the Brutes are loyal to the Prophet Truth who is power hungry enough to effectively stage a military coup and take control of everything - killing the other council members in the process.
Regret made his move too soon and paid the price - he may have thought that Earth would be a pushover, his religious zeal would win through or even just taken a gamble because he wanted all the glory for himself. Real generals have made all of those mistakes before.
Whatever his reason, he soon found out that he was under equipped to do the job - which is why everyone is surprised that the Covenant have attacked with so few ships and why just before MC takes him out, we hear Cortana telling us that she’s intercepted a transmission from Regret begging the Council for reinforcements.
I didn’t get the whole military coup Prophet of Truth thing.
From what I’ve read the only difference in the ending on Legendary is the inclusion of a line about saying something about Febraury 9th. This is supposedly the target date for downloadable content.
