Clive Barker's Undying: is this supposed to be scary?

I’ve heard rave (well, cower) reviews of this game. Bought it, played it, wasn’t scared in the least, gave up in frustration sometime after entering the freaky dream world.
Does this game get better or scarier later on? Is it worth the trouble?

Does any FP* that’s not a shooter besides the Thief series. Can anyone reccomend FP-non-shooters?

System Shock 2 was pretty scary in places - scarier than Undying, definitely. I didn’t think Undying did that bad, though, better than most games that attempt to be scary. It made me jump a lot of times, especially when I would turn on my ‘second sight’ to see better in a dark area and suddenly see a ghost standing right in front of me, or a painting change, or something like that.

I only played Undying for a little bit, but what I saw was pretty creepy. Even in the beginning when you turn on the “Second Sight” and there’s suddenly a guy hanging from the lamp post, it made good use of some creepy moments. What pissed me off about the game was getting a small collection of “Super weapons” and spending half an hour cutting this fucking bitch of a vampire with this super scyth and apparently not getting anywhere (how does one beat her, by the way? It’s the blond haired woman; she’s a vampire, as far as I can tell, and when you walk in the room, she’s at a dinning table. We hacked at her forever and then just gave up).

Half Life is pretty damned creepy. It’s another first person shooter, but if you haven’t played it, it’s fucking great. The first half is creepy as hell, and then it just gets to be fun.

I liked Undying, I thought it had a good creepy atmosphere. I never got actually scared, which I doubt any video game could do, but during the part near the beginning where you are fighting those dog-like things my pomeranian decided to jump in my lap, which made me almost shit.

Elvis, IIRC you keep slashing her until she starts to glow white, then you aim for head and decapitate her.

I played Undying a couple of times and, while it didn’t scare me, it creeped me out a bit.

The game that really scared me was “Phantasmagoria II: A Puzzle of Flesh”. The first %75 of the game was truely scary and puzzle based. It really freaked me out. Regretably it seems that the developers ran out of time and threw the last part of the game together just to make a deadline. It is an old game, and except for the ending, it was well done.

Hmmm, first person-non shooters? There are fps’s with sneak elements though they aren’t done to good effect like in thief. No One Live’s Forever has some sneaking and is a good FPS overall. The only other first person genre would be an RPG like Wizaardy 8 or Morrowind.

I finished Deus Ex without firing a shot. There’s a few people in the game you have to kill but two of them have a way to do so without any action and by the time you get to the third

you have essentially a light-saber that kills him in one or two swipes.

This was made by Looking Glass Studios, the same developers that did Thief. Play it at night, with headphones and tell me it does not scare the crap outta you.

Everything is done great in here, from the feeling of being the only one there (they spared no expense to have bodies, scenes of battle and blood all over the place), and especially the sound effects. Hearing former crew screaming “Help meeee!” as they shamble down the corridor is beyond the willies. Also the AI is ruthless as demonstrated by me creeping past a office not noticing one of the monsters/former crewmate. It followed me for a good 2 turns and I kept hearing it but could not pinpoint where it was. Suddenly I hear a huge “Immmm SOOORRRYYY!!” right behind me as the creature attacked me. Spinning and having that grisly thing that close scared me to no end.

And let’s just not talk about the big honking twist in the middle. Being a player of the first and second game, that voice was SO unwelcome when it decided to show its nasty face.
