The late Dr. J. Allen Hynek devised a classification system for close encounters for his book The UFO Experience in 1972. These categories have been widely accepted by ufologists and they stand to this day.

That page also has much more detailed descriptions of the types than I gave in my first post. It also doesn’t include Fourth & Fifth, which suggests those were added later by people other than Dr. Hynek.

No, the fourth and fifth kinds were not in his 1972 book, where he coined the terms. Hynek was a special consultant on Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, too. In the 1977 documentary about the movie (on the new DVD), Hynek explains the differences in the three kinds of close encounters. Those are all that he mentions.
