I’m reserving the .1% to close encounters of the first kind. After all, a UFO doesn’t have to be the mothership come to take us home.
No, the fourth and fifth kinds were not in his 1972 book, where he coined the terms. Hynek was a special consultant on Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind, too. In the 1977 documentary about the movie (on the new DVD), Hynek explains the differences in the three kinds of close encounters. Those are all that he mentions.
Well, don’t I feel stupid. I always thought it meant Male and Female (not neccesarily in that order) as the first and second, then the aliens as the third…
