Closed captioning brought to you in part by...

So, I’ve been watching lots of syndicated stuff lately and I’ve noticed some stuff that’s lead to questions.

First of all, why is it “in part by”? Are there other sponsors who were a different part who aren’t getting their plugs?

Who sponsors it during the original broadcast?

Finally, how do they decide who does the “Brought to you in part by” announcement? On some shows it’s a member of the regular cast, sometimes it’s some generic guy (who seems to do a lot), and sometimes it’s some oddball guest star. For example, on That 70’s Show the guy doing the voiceover is quite obviously Danny Bonaduce - a guy who made guest appearances in something like 3 episodes.

Closed-captioning of television shows is usually funded by the United States Department of Education. I’m not sure why they have sponsors for syndicated reruns, but I do know it’s done on Jeopardy, and some talk shows as well.

Tax write-off?
