Closed Debate Thread

Tom closed a thread on the Great Debates Forum with this comment:

This OP wasn’t from some other places. It was posted in other places by the same person for the same purpose. It was not a personal monologue any more than any other OP. Unlike the the site that lieu had intuitive feelings about –

– this site did have several responses. But by the time the OP returned to discuss his position, the thread had been closed. He is new to the SDMB and was unaware that he could not also post this elsewhere.

And lieu was mistaken. The O.P. was ready for discussion. The presentation was unusually creative, but I hate to think that we completely discourage that here. I know there were some of us who didn’t have difficulty understanding his points. Maybe it was killed off in the wrong forum and should have been elsewhere. I don’t know.

How can something be more connected to the SDMB than something already posted here and receiving responses from several posters? How can it be more connected to reality than discussing what is of real value? And why invite only Maia’s Well and me as if we were the only ones who had shown an interest?

Do you really restart a subject like that and keep it similar only different?

I still say we must have a look at Paul Atreides, on Caladan.

It was spam, pure and simple, as evidenced by the multiple forum postings on this board, the linked bodybuilding forum and this blog posting (see comments). Most likely it’s just bot spam looking for sites where it can register, post, and come back later for more spam with actual links. The OP wouldn’t have returned because the OP wasn’t a real person who actually wanted a discussion.

So, since we close spam threads (and typically move them out of sight), please feel free to start a new thread if you want to continue the discussion you and Maia’s Well were having.

But he did return, read what had been posted and explained to me in a PM why he had done what he had done at SD and elsewhere. What he was saying wasn’t just gibberish. Sorry that some of you didn’t get it and decided that it didn’t mean anything.

Why would you suspect the worst of him when his philosophy in general is very decent? Is something automatically “spam” if it has been posted on other websites? How can you know what his intentions were or are from one post? Why are you and lieu so certain that you can read his mind and somehow know what he is and is not planning to do?

From my post to Tom above:

I’m sending you all back to freshman English with lots of hours spent on metaphorical language and basic reading skills. Take that, you rascals!

If he actually sent you a PM, then I stand corrected about him being a bot; however, it doesn’t change the fact that he had littered other sites with his exact same “message” (over 200 times at one place) regardless of the type of site, and used misleading titles (“Worried about penis size” on the bodybuilding forum) to draw in readers. So, yes, that’s still spam; and, no, he’s not allowed to peddle it here.

Zoe, with the highest of respect, Skip is right about this one. Yes, it was different. Almost Triskadecamish. Still, it was spam by definition. The invitation to open a new thread to discuss the matter (whatever it is) seems reasonable. And the ban seems appropriate, at least to me.

Are you still giggling about this?

Let’s just say that when a thought enters AT’s head, it takes a very long time for it to find its way out. We should be thankful he’s stopped talking about Hogg.

You’ve already been counseled about this subject in Great Debates and asked to stop it – to continue this in another forum is not useful.

If this is a joke, it’s falling flat.

You surely do not want a formal Warning here.

Thanks for the courtesy of your response, Skip.
