Closed thread (lost wallet)

I would like to request that this thread be re-opened. It was locked after a couple of people complained that every time there was a new post, they were notfied of the update but generally disappointed to find that the new posts did not resolve the OP. (The last few dozen posts have largely been people just inquiring about whether theer has been any progress.)

While I understand the minor frustration this creates, I think closing the thread is the wrong decision. I’d wager that there are hundreds of folks subscribed to it. We did that so that we could be kept abreast of new developments. Now, if updates are posted in a separate thread, there’s a good likelihood that many of us may miss it. This is the whole point of being able to subscribe to a thread. If some subscribers are annoyed by the false alarms, the better solution is for them to unsubscribe, or to simply resist the urge to click-through. That’s a much better solution than simply discarding all the rest of us who want to stray subscribed.

Surely I can’t be the only one who feels this way.

The original thread is getting kind of big and the more posts that are written to it the more the chance that it may become corrupted and unusable.

As already requested by a moderator in that forum, if there’s any update please start a new thread and reference the old one. And we’ll move forward.

Thanks.

I agree 100%. Just wait, when the wallet owner is found, for months afterward, people will be saying, “What? When did this happen? Why wasn’t I notified?”

I don’t really have much of an opinion on whether the thread should have been closed. I wasn’t subscribed to it, so i won’t miss it.

But your claim about it becoming corrupted and unusable is just bizarre.

I post on another (free) message board that has a thread with over 7,900 replies, and many other threads with replies in the thousands. Are you seriously telling me that a 9-page thread, one with just over 400 replies, is in danger of becoming too big for the database to handle?

Well, GQ is really about answering questions, and that particular question is as answered as it’s gonna get (and it really shouldn’t be bumped if there’s no new information). So closing seems like the right answer.

But how about a compromise solution?

Someone open up a “wallet thread” in MPSIMS and ask Tuba to post in the original (locked) thread with a link. That should notify everyone who’s subscribed of the change of venue. Then everyone who remains interested can re-subscribe to the new MPSIMS thread, and that thread is now both shorter and in the appropriate forum. Then that thread can be bumped with updates as they occur (or don’t). Nice and tidy, and everyone wins.

Lost Wallet-Part Deux has been opened in MPSIMS. Please subscribe to that thread if you wish to follow the progress.

Not a tech person here, but when you start out with a Board(SDMB) which has a corrupt database(not to mention many of the twisted posters  ), it might not be implausable that some long threads cause things to get a bit more wonky. Just sayin’

Thanks. Great solution.
