Um, no… Demise was not hiding behind an icon… Demise was right out in the open with an icon. Good lord, are you really getting that upset over a “smiley”?

Towers also control a volume of airspace around and nearby an airport, too. There are still airplanes flying along the lakefront because it is still the designated VFR flyway. The only difference is that now it’s become uncontrolled airspace.
No, it’s not. Just what do you think “regional ATC” is? The TRACON? That handles high-altitude traffic on an instrument flight plan, not low-level visual flight in or around airports. Once again, you display an ignorance of how the system works.
The alternatives, at this point, are either Midway or O’Hare ATC. Two problems with that - one, their radar can’t see through the big, tall buildings everyone is so concerned with, and two, neither group wants it. Of course, you’ll probably discount that, nevermind I got that information from two air traffic controllers I spoke with last week (Wednesday, to be more precise). You could look up either Midway or O’Hare’s tower in the phone book and call them and ask but I expect you won’t believe them, either.
So tell me what horrible thing were those pilots doing at Meigs? Standing on the fence making faces at KoalaBear and going “neener, neener, neener”? Seriously, what harm were those aircraft doing?
Let’s see… business, transportation, medical care… wasn’t Meigs involved in those three items on your list?
No, but Chicago is well on it’s way to topping the list of murders this year. What, seven people shot over Easter Weekend? And more since? Then again, if the Mayor and City Hall don’t respect the law why should anyone else?
Gee, I dunno… if there were that many opera enthusiasts in my city, and it was that much a part of the economy, maybe I would. If you don’t support your local businesses one day you’ll wake up and they’ll be gone.
Well, not really. You see, it’s true the “average small plane” can’t distribute powders or liquids efficiently where it is false that “the average large plane cannot fly at supersonic velocity”. Those Boeing 747’s and 777’s, and the big Airbus types can fly in excess of Mach 1. Although they can not do this in level flight, it would not take much of a dive while at full power for them to break the sound barrier. But I’ll give you a pass on that one, Koala, since even many aviation enthusiasts don’t know that.
Oh, you’d like that, wouldn’t you? Can’t defeat me in open debate, so you’d make a false report to the authorities. Wow, what’s next, sending a backhoe to my driveway? Excuse me, are you Mayor Daley? Because that’s a very Daley tactic.
I already did, several times. Perhaps you can go back and actually read those posts.
Why not? And don’t say “because you’re a liar” because you have demonstrated that. PROVE that O’Hare and Midway are not up to capacity.
No, they have no means of getting there. Those “alternative airports” as you describe them are not as convenient or easy to get to. This adds time, expense, and aggravation to getting them to and from. You have obviously never been dirt poor or you would appreciate the difficulty posed by this.
Of course, that totally blows past the fact that Meigs was easy for kids in the projects to get to. In fact, they didn’t have to wait for a tour group to organize. If they had set up a mentor/mentee relationship with a pilot (as I stated has happened) they could go down to Meigs frequently, on their own, just as they could visit the Field Museum or Shedd Aquarium or Adler Planetarium on their own for an educational experience. Or just someplace to go other than a gang and drug infested neighborhood.
Renting a bus costs money, Koala - care to donate?
Gosh, darn, those pilots just can’t win with you, can they? They’re either “high and mighty” or “slumming it”. Just admit it, Koala, you don’t like people who fly. I don’t know if it’s jealousy or phobia or just out and out bigotry, but you don’t like us.
I’m not mad, Koala. Or angry or upset or whatever you think I am. This really IS entertainment for me. Do you WANT me to be angry? Why?
They may have asked for one - but the Mayor has spent the last 5 years manuvering to eliminate everyone of the reasons it was re-opened last time. They would not have gotten an injunction That’s the stupid irony of it. If the Mayor had said “Meigs will be closed in 30 days” (not a week - it would have to be a 30 day minimum) there’s not a darn thing anyone could have done about it. But he couldn’t wait another 30 days to get his way.
By destroying the runway as he did the Mayor broke both state and Federal law, opening himself up to possible criminal proceedings, not to mention considerable liability from the inconvenience posed to the 16 pilots trapped there.
You also underestimate the opposition. It’s not one group, it’s several. Well over 600 aviation lawyers have stepped forward to offer their services. This is not some small, pissant community group taking on the Big Bad Mayor, it’s a lot of people, and a number of groups who are used to dealing with politics on local, state, and Federal levels. It’s not just “Friends of Meigs”. The Meigs defense fund has received donations from not just around the United States and North America but also Europe and Australia. Which is a little fact that both you and Mayor Daley don’t grasp - that this little airport matters to people all around the world, it’s not just a local issue or attraction.
Are they going to win? Who knows? But it won’t be a matter of “spending into the ground” a local community group. These guys have access to the funds to keep this going until the bitter end - and they will. When will that come? Darn if I know. I know the rubble stays put at least until the 16th of this month, after that, who knows? But it’s hardly the cut-and-dried victory Daley (and you) are making this out to be.
Well, you have.
It doesn’t cost me a dime to post on the Straight Dope, and it is entertaining - why else would I do it?
Please do. It would be much more fun to discuss this topic with someone who actually has some grasp of the issues at hand and doesn’t resort to “You’re wrong!” and “You’re a liar!” or “I don’t believe you!” when caught in their ignorance.
In just about every one of your posts, too. It’s amazing. Seriously, Koala, a simple call to the local Flight Standards District Office could clear up a lot of confusion on your part. They’re in the phone book, and talking to the general public is part of their job. Why don’t you give them a call? The one for Chicago is the DuPage FSDO, located at DuPage airport. I’d say drop by for a visit but you do need an appointment first.
Well, yeah, that’s all true.
See, the difference is, this topic is about Meigs field, terrorism, that law-breaker Mayor, and related aviation topics such as air traffic control and the capabilities of various aircraft. The only way in which sex is relevant to Meigs is, perhaps, the “Mile High Charter” company that used to operate out of that field, but they moved to Palwaukee in 1996 or 1997 (don’t remember exactly). Which, by the way, I never flew on, just to set the record straight on that. Your sexual inneundos are on the same level as remarks such as “you’re ugly” or “you’re just a girl” or the like - totally irrelevant to the subject at hand, and spoken just to cause offense and/or anger.
And you ARE ignorant about aviation. That is painfully obvious. You don’t have to be - there’s no reason you can’t learn about aviation. As I said - you can talk to the FSDO, you can call an ATC tower (try to avoid the rush hours, though, they are busy a lot of time and traffic control does come first). Go to a library and read a book or two. Crusie the web, for goodness sake. Educating yourself is not going to tempt you to the “dark side” or make you like us, but it would make you able to discuss and argue based on facts instead of your fears and phobias and the inaccurate crap fed to you by the cheapher mainstream media outlets. Or just read Forbes and Crain’s Chicago Business on the issue - they’ve got a different take than we pilots but they, too, think it was a bad idea. For completely different reasons.
Unless, of course, your postings here full of calls of “Liar! Liar!” and sexual innuendos is YOUR idea of cheap entertainment…? If that’s the case, let’s take it to the Pit where we can really cut lose, hm?
No, they are not. You’ve been warned already, KoalaBear…cheap shots about people’s sex lives have no place in a argument about aviation, fercryinoutloud. Quit it or Pit it, or you may find yourself without posting privileges. The rest of you, take it down a notch as well.
Well, that just proves the point, doesn’t it? This dropping of powders and such from an airplane just isn’t as easy as folks think it is.
:smack: Doh!
How about “all of the above”?
Well, there’s also the detail that the folks near Midway live literally across the street from where the jets land. You’ve got an incredibly tight fit there with the runways and streets. O’Hare gives pilots a much greater margin for error than Midway does. Planes fly much closer to houses over Midway than over O’Hare. The Midway neighbors have just as much problems with noise pollution (and other pollution) generated by the airport but, being in Chicago, don’t have the political voice of those living in the western suburbs. The Midway neighbors have known for a long time that if they complain too loudly Daley would just condemn their property and bulldoze their homes, probably giving the excuse of safety and security to do so
Another major difference is that the homes on the south side pre-dated Midway’s existance as a commercial hub. O’Hare was just open fields and the cities grew up around it - in other words, in that case the airport was there first. What were those people thinking when they bought their homes? They didn’t notice those jets going by overhead every 90 seconds?
Yeah, I live under an airport pattern, too - but there’s a huge difference between small planes going by overhead and the jumbo jets.
I think it’s quite significant that Fox32, a local station that is generally anti-general aviation, actually openly criticized the Mayor for his actions on this one. The issue does get media play, both on the TV and in the newspapers around here. It’s sunk to a lower level for the moment, but I expect things will pick up again near the next court date (That’s May 15 or 16)
Meanwhile, business has picked up at both Lansing and Gary airports. Come to think of it, my airport is getting some more transients, too. Gary Jet Center has been able to hire a couple new people (good! jobs!) and they have, as I previously mentioned, picked up one of the Meigs controllers (good! jobs!). Boeing is renting still more space from Gary (pity Da Mayor didn’t think of renting space to Boeing downtown, what with their corporate offices nearby and everything, revenue and, oh yes, jobs for Chicago…) and there is apparently some deal in the works to have a regional airline start commercial service out of Gary again. Rumor has it they were looking at an Illinois airport but they don’t like the politcal climate there any more.
See, living where I do, I figure I’ll get some benefit out of this fiasco one way or another. Either we get Meigs back (which would be way cool) or else my neighborhood gets more business (which is good for us). Heck, maybe we’ll even get both, and that would be really grand.
(Must say, I’m not happy with the proposed 757’s for the regional traffic, but they wouldn’t have been flying into Meigs anyhow so that’s all I have to say about that.)
KoalaBear: You can hate general aviation aircraft and the people who fly them all you want. You can celebrate the closure of Meigs Field and dance in the street 'til the cows come home. It’s your right to feel the way you feel. But please do not try to justify your feelings by spewing false information, accusing others of conspiracies and dishonesty, and ignoring facts and evidence. There are pages of evidence in this thread to show that small airports are not terror threats, Meigs was not a terror threat, small aircraft are not terror threats, and that Chicago is no safer now (and indeed may be less safe) for the closing of Meigs. You may not personally believe the evidence, but “facts is facts”. That you don’t believe them does not make them any less true.
Why do you feel compelled to argue? Your assertions have been shown to be incorrect, and yet you continue to repeat them. You accuse Broomstick of being a liar, and yet the only evidence you offer is a bit of hyperbolic rhetoric. You have done nothing to support your side of the argument, but instead merely contradict without giving a shred of evidence.
I’m asking you to be honest.
If you don’t like airplanes and airports, just say so. Though we disagree with it, I’m sure everyone here will accept your opinion.
But please stop shouting “Terrorism!” when it has been shown several times by several posters that such fears are unwarranted. You know nothing of aviation in general, and even less about general aviation. You not only do not have any facts (at least, none that you have been willing to share with the rest of us), but you refuse to educate yourself on the issue. You have shown up to a gunfight armed with a pointed stick. And it’s not even very pointy.
A debate consists or reasoned arguments and all you are doing is contradicting. Putting your hands over your ears and shouting, “LA! LA! LA! I can’t hear you! You’re a liar! LA! LA! LA!” is not a debate.
Again: It’s clear you don’t like airplanes or pilots. Just say so and stop trying to justify it with falsehoods.
Clearly surfing on his destruction of Meigs, he is now intending to bulldoze more businesses, homes, and a couple cemetaries for his own goals. Nevermind this land he covets is outside both the city of Chicago and Cook County.
Originally desiring all land within 5 miles of O’Hare, he’s “backed down” to a mere 433 acres
In other words, the common herd will pay for this. It will cost you more to fly through Chicago, but since Chicago is a major hub you may not be given much choice if you fly American or United.
No doubt, as soon as he can he’ll roll the 'dozers and present people with another fait accompli
Aside from the frightening thought that this man is involved in “airport planning” on any level, there’s a definite hypocrisy in closing Meigs because 30,000 small airplane flights a year supposedly put the city at risk, but he’s planning to add another 900,000 or so flights over the city.
Which also leaves the question of how the heck the ATC system is going to handle this, when they can barely handle the traffic load now.
He’s da duly elected emperor- I mean mayor. He was elected by a landslide. (of course, only a small percentage of the people voted) He can do what he damned well pleases, and he will.
Plus, with his hand firmly jammed up Da Gubner’s backside, controlling HIS actions, it’s not like he’ll have any opposition. What a :wally
Truth is, that’s how politics is played there. Indeed, this week’s edition of the Reader (you know - the free weekly that hosts the world-famous column “The Straight Dope”) even had a blurb about how very similar tactics were used to open the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal in 1900 - opposed by everyone downstream on the Illinois, Missouri, and Mississippi rivers due to the amount of sewage output generated even then by Chicago.
Unfortunatley, that IS the state of affairs in Northern Illinois at present. The mayor of Elk Grove Village took some ribbing for posting cop cars in an industrial park bordering O’Hare airport just after Meigs was plowed… but Da Mare has been after that piece of land for at least 5 years and, in fact, it’s due to be condemned and annexed as part of the O’Hare project. In addition, so is 80% of Bensenville. We’re not talking about a vacant lot here - were talking the elimination of Bensenville and the decimation of other suburbs nearby. THAT is no secret - the plans have been published already.
Which is WHY I’m so steamed about this Meigs thing - yes, I’m bummed about the airport but WORSE than that is Daley getting away with breaking the law, jumping jurisdictions, dispensing with open government, and ignoring democracy.
Where does this end? Darn if I know… but I’m sort of glad to be living in Indiana. It’s still no garauntee. Chicago cops have jumped the border numerous times, including to shoo people away from fireworks stores and threatening to arrest residents of Indiana who patronize them, despite this being a completely legal activity on our side of the state line.
It’s only going to get worse before it gets better.
It seems odd to me that a politician can get away with breaking laws and voilating jurisdictions. I have no cites to back this up, but I get the impression around there (California) that many politicians and agencies that are very jealous of their bailiwicks and would raise a fuss over such violations.
About the fireworks: Why don’t Indiana authorities arrest the intruders? Although the Chicago cops are cops in Chicago, they are not cops in Indiana. So wouldn’t they be guilty of “impersonation” or “colour of law” violations? And they threaten to arrest Indiana residents in Indiana for doing something that is not against the law? All they can do is threaten. If they actually tried to arrest them, I’d think they would be open to a lawsuit. (Under the anti-terrorism paranoia, might they conceivably even be charged with “terrorist acts”?)
It’s odd to me that this is going on, and I’ve lived here in the area 18 years.
Fact is, a lot of people are afraid of Daley. For years, anyone who spoke out against him would have multiple building inspections, violations, parking tickets, etc. - all “coincidence”, of course. But his opponents spend so much time in court battling building code and parking violations they have no more time or money left to deal with the issue they initially raised. Or they move out of the area – in which case Daley doesn’t care anymore because they can no longer vote for or against him.
Even in the 1990’s, a could of independent alderman running for the city council had been shot at - again, just another “coincidental” drive-by type shooting.
The fireworks instance happened about 5 years ago. Fireworks are pretty much illegal in the Chicago area, but can be sold openly in Indiana (and are). And it’s no secret that Chicago residents DO cross that border to buy them. Daley “justified” his sending Chicago cops to hang out in the parking lots of Indiana businesses as “protecting” his citizens. Well, fine, that’s what the freakin’ checkpoints on the Illinois/Indiana border were for (and they still do that, every year, with cars being stopped and inspected for “contraband”). But, as you point out, Chicago cops have ZERO jurisdiction in Indiana. If Daley has a problem with his citizens breaking his laws that’s his problem, not ours.
That same year Daley also had city choppers hanging out over the state border, tracking “suspicious” cars and “suspicious” activity. They were doing a lot of hovering, too. Got to the point that were disrupting air traffic for a half dozen airports, including Midway. Chicago Center told them to move their butts out of the way of the big iron (I actually heard this on our scanner). The reply “We’ve been ordered here by the mayor of Chicago, you can’t tell us what to do.” Chicago Center told them “We work for the Federal government and if you don’t move your ass out of the way we’ll call in a couple of F-16’s or some Blackhawks to show you who’s really in charge up there.”
Daley, of course, has only gotten more arrogant in the meanwhile.
It would be interesting to see what happens if Daley gets his legislation to condemn outside Cook County. If he does I have no doubt the backhoes will roll - it worked on Soldier Field, it worked on Meigs, surely it will work on a couple of pissant suburbs, right? AND it would handily eliminate most of a couple of electoral districts that have opposed Daley on both the state and national levels.
One little hitch in all this is that guns ARE legal in those areas. This could get extremely nasty. Maybe. Or maybe they’ll just roll over like dying dogs and he’ll get away with it again.
Frankly, I’m glad I moved out of Chicago 5 years ago. I’m considering ditching the job downtown, too, and getting even further away. It’s a mess, plain and simple.
Broomstick’s last post is right on about the state of things here in Chicago. I think that we all should find Mayor Daley’s behavior to be disturbing to say the least, terrorism arguments aside. I am ashamed to contribute to that mans salary with exorbitant taxes.
I have aspirations to become a pilot, and I have spent my share of afternoons watching planes at Meigs as a poor college student. I’ve also been yelled at by police for standing in the parking lot there; I guess at the time I may have looked threatening standing there with my mountain bike
By the way, I’ve spent maybe the past hour reading through all of these posts, and I compliment you and Johnny’s ability to stand your ground in the face of such stubbornness.
KoalaBear: you should go to this website. I hope it finds you well.
The Oklahoma Aeronautics Commission has produced a resolution against Da Mare and for re-opening Meigs field. Unfortunately, for some reason I can’t get quick n’ easy linking feature to work, but here’s the address:
Friday, May 16 the was a “day in court” for the Federal lawsuit. The judge set the next date in this one as June 5. The next “day in court” for the state case is May 23:
Truthfully, not a lot progress made, more a maintenance of the status quo. We don’t have an airport, and Daley doesn’t have a park. What everyone does have is a pile of rubble on the Chicago lakefront. How attractive.
I don’t mind a debate. I might even change my position if the opposing argument convinces me. But I don’t much care for arguing; and faced with unsupported contradictions, that’s what a lot of this thread was. Nevertheless, these boards are about fighting ignorance and one must fight against ignorance. KoalaBear must be on holiday or otherwise occupied. She hasn’t posted to the boards for two weeks.
Now didn’t I say, right there in my post, that I was having problems with the links? Yes? OK, well, there’s the proof…
hmmphrff grumble grumble grumble…
Well, folks who want to read up on it, just go to www.aopa.org, OK? If you think this glitch with the machinery was interesting you should have seen what I did with the airplane on Tuesday. On second thought, maybe it’s better you didn’t.
At least one positive effect: More and more people waking up to what a brazen despot Hizzoner is. Not that anything short of a couple thousand marines would eliminate the menace, but one can dream…
Looks like the pilots who were stranded are having some trouble getting reimbursed for their city-induced expenses. Nevermind the mayor’s promises - well, heck, we know what his word is worth, don’t we?
