Or, maybe they should be call the “I Hate George Bush club”
What a bunch of crap! How could they possible give the Peace Prize to Obama? Maybe this was their reasoning:
He’s increased the troop levels in Afghanistan…but not that much!
He’s sort-of begun to reduce the troop strength in Iraq.
He’s only following some of Bush’s secrecy and indefinite detention policies.
I think it’s because, hey, he’s not George. During Bush’s tenure, they gave the prize to Carter and Gore, and as soon as he’s out, they give it to his successor.
Maybe they could have given it to one of the few US Senators who actually voted against the AUMF, rather than one who said he would have, had he been there.
They’ve destroyed whatever integrity was left in that prize. It removes the honor from the people who have already won it. If they were looking to give it to an American, even Bush the Elder and Clinton have done more.
Well, we’ve finally found people who actually think he’s the Messiah: the members of the Nobel Committee.
Seriously. I voted for the guy, I like him all right, but this is downright offensive to Martin Luther King, Doctors Without Borders, and everybody else who has made serious sacrifices in a long career of helping the world be a better place. I was hoping the local newspaper got it off the Onion or something, but evidently not.
I’m a big Obama fan (yeah, the only right-wing Obama fan on the SDMB; I love how it confuses Dopers and destroys their worldview) but this is absolutely pathetic and it cheapens the Nobel Peace Prize. There was no one else, not in the entire freaking world, who could be nominated? Someone who’s actually had time to accomplish something? No one else?
He didn’t deserve it. I like the guy, but, c’mon. BUT, looking on the bright side, it will be hilarious to read about on Free Republic. It’s even kind of justifiable outrage, but at this point they’ve cried wolf so much it doesn’t matter. I wish we could all get along, but since they refuse, I get a lot of giggles from reading their sputterings.
That’s what I was thinking, too. You put it exactly right.
(That’s what I get for ranting first thing in the AM while rushing out the door to catch a train. It’s a lame rant, I know, but I was really angry and had to get something down before I left for work.)
I don’t know, my impression is that SenorBeef is somewhat right-wing, but an Obama fan.
Anyway, you don’t seem that right wing to me, other than gun rights.
Back to the rant, Obama gets it for making pretty speeches. Gandhi doesn’t, even after putting his life on the line and practically creating the peaceful protest movement. (I’m sure I’m wrong about the second one, but I’m angry, so sue me.)
This does zero to bring more peace to the world, and may harm the effort by giving Obama’s opponents more fodder. leander said it best.
I think the rest of the world just wanted to award it to “the American president who ISN’T George Bush…what’s his name? The black guy with the good-looking wife?”
Who knew the Nobel committee was so shallow in their hatred of former President Bush, because this is nothing buy a smack in the face to the previous administration. I would love to see how they twist and squirm while saying it is not. NY Governor Patterson can see the handprint across Bush’s face.
