Put me in the “about f’n time!” camp. I may, in fact, have said that out loud when my phone showed me the CNN alert: “With no evidence, Trump claims Obama tapped his phone” (or something very close to that.)
When a baseless claim is made, it needs to be in the headline, preferably before the claim, just like that. Trump has had the fact that he is lying buried three or four paragraphs down for far too long.
The next step will be to make each story about the fact that the president is lying, rather than the subject of his lies. I give that a month…three tops.
I equate an investigation into Trump’s claims with this: The police are called to a residence where the owner reports a burglary. When asked why he believes this, the owner says, “I have nothing to say but my lawyer and I demand an investigation”. To which the cops reply, “Call us back when you have something. We have other work to do”. If that homeowner then provided “alternate facts” to back up his claim he could/would be charged with filing false reports to the police. If he had nothing to add there would be no investigation.
Question for you. The House Intelligence Committee has directed the FBI to turn over all evidence of any wiretaps, including any applications to judges for wiretaps, that have anything to do with Trump’s claims of being wiretapped.
If the FBI responds, “There are no documents about this because there never were any wiretaps,” would that, in your view, be the end of the investigation and proof positive that Trump lied?
There’s also the possibility that Trump had no clue he could, as president, even call the security agencies and check. He could really be that ignorant.
