Coal in the Christmas stocking

We have a one-car household, and I am the only one in the household healthy enough to go to work. Unfortunately, I only earn enough to have liability insurance for the vehicle, and this evening the car water-slid, fish-tailed and played played bumper car with the meridian, twisting up the left rear wheel and messing up the left side of the car badly. Everyone’s o.k., but paying for the tow alone is going to be a bitch, let alone even thinking about repairs. It’s now going to cost me $5 round trip to work by bus each day.

I’m sorry to hear this, and I wish I could say or do something for you.

Sometimes life just stinks.

By the way, I wasn’t in the car when the accident happened-it was another of the householders that was on the insurance, along with a friend. She was borrowing the car to drive to her family for the holidays and, well, the rest is history. When she called me this early evening and I answered the phone, all I heard were sirens and sobbing. Panic doesn’t begin to describe how I felt, I tell you. Finally, she started talking and told me what happened. She and her friend were o.k., but she thought I would tear her a new one for what happened to the car. Of course I was much more concerned that she was safe and was able to get a ride to her parent’s place, and I told her to just call the insurance people for advice, get the car towed somewhere close, and to get someplace warm-we’ll take care of the details tomorrow. I’m upset about the possible loss of the car…but I don’t think I could handle losing my friend.

So sorry this has happened. Any way you can car pool with anybody in the neighborhood going your way? I don’t know if this helps, since I don’t know if the body damage would nix it, but a couple years ago when we had to have some tires we applied for and got a Firestone card (with shit credit) with their basic credit line of $1400.00. They do a slew of repairs I would never have thought of and have been our go-to guys ever since.

Firestone is noted for doing “repairs” that only they know are needed.

I avoid them - NEVER let them put your car on a lift.

Sorry to hear about the accident, Czarcasm, that’s never fun when you only carry liability insurance. Any chance there was a roadside assistance clause on your policy? My liability only policies cover towing reagrdless of fault.

Firestone has both franchise and corporate stores. Quality of service and ethics may vary widely depending on local management, just as you would find with any other franchise.

The car is in a lot worse shape than I feared-totaled. I can sell it as-is for a grand, and they’ll throw in the cost of the towing. Y’all want to hear the kicker?

I just got word that my brand new specialty license plates(U.S.A.F. Commemorative) should be at my house tomorrow.

The Gift of the Magi. Sorry to hear about this, hope next year is better for you.

Turns out the DMV screwed up the application for the commemorative plates. Over three weeks after My Beloved showed up with all the appropriate paperwork, including my DD-214, to get the U.S.A.F. plates, we received a letter from them Saturday stating that unless we show them a copy of my DD-214 they can’t issue us the plates.
We are going to go down to the DMV after I get off work today to thank them for screwing up the paperwork, and ask for our money back because we won’t be needing those plates after all.

A small victory, yes, but it is One Good Thing.

At least $1,000 will get you to and from work while you figure something out.
Hang in there. Something will work out.

A touching update-I found out that the dear friend that was involved in the accident(and was slightly injured herself) started a GoFundMe account in an attempt to pay us back for the car. I’m not going to tell you where to find it, or even give you a clue-I just wanted to say that I think it’s wonderful that she is doing this.
