Coca-Cola Orange (and other interesting soft drinks)

Us kids were allowed soda in two circumstances: special occasions (i.e.: New Year’s Eve or with cake on somebody’s birthday) or purchased with our own money.

My latest flavor of soda is Fanta Mango. It’s very sweet so I load it up with ice and add a little lemon.

The coconut flavor is just a bit too coconut.

Want to be a hero? Next time your lawn service is out to the house–on a typical Houston summer day (415 degrees F)–bring each crew-member a liter of ice-cold sparkling water as well as a couple bux each for a tip; you will be God in their eyes.

I spent the first week of August in Sugar Land one year. AFAIK, that was the only time I’ve been sunburned the entire length of both arms (shoulder to fingertips).

The local Noodles & Company has one of those Coca-Cola Freestyle machines. It hasn’t occurred to me to try coke with orange, but maybe I should. When I took a vacation in Germany, many years ago, I remember having a soft drink called Spezi, which was basically a mixture of cola and orange soda. I seem to recall that it was pretty good, and it’s something you can’t normally get in the States. I believe that I will give that machine a whirl, and see if I can mix up a U.S. equivalent.

I’m surprised to learn that Big Red is apparently regional–it’s very common around here.

Next time y’all decide to visit the in-laws, throw a shout out to us Dopers living in Louisville.

Vanilla and Cherry Coke are available in bottles; there are also Coke Zero versions, but I have only seen those in cans.

Something else Coca-Cola makes that I can only find out east: Barq’s Red Cream Soda. (While you’re at it, how about sending a few diet Barq’s root beer in 2L bottles this way as well?)

A while back, Harvey’s supermarkets (and Winn-Dixie, too, I suppose) made three new flavors of their Chek sodas. They had a contest to see which would stay in production: key lime, tropical punch, and some other flavor. I tried the key lime since I’m a lime fan (hey Skittles- your green apple sucks!!) It was really good and tasted like lime sherbet. Too bad the tropical punch won.

Kroger makes some good flavors. Their peach soda is good. I recently noticed they had cream soda and vanilla cream soda, which seemed sort of strange. Anyway, I got the vanilla cream soda. It tastes like vanilla ice cream.

You spent the entire 45 seconds outside? Risky, my friend, risky.

The heat’s not bad if the humidity’s low (a rare occurrence), but that sun will peel the hide off ya.

I couldn’t agree more! Coke w/ Lime does not taste natural to me at all. They used to make Diet Pepsi Twist (= Diet Pepsi with lemon) and it was amazing.

A couple years ago, I was on an interview panel for a new sales leader here and one of the applicants was a former Pepsi exec, so I had to give him a hard time about discontinuing Pepsi Twist

I lived near a liquor store that would get weird flavors/brands of soda and tried big red in the 80s

I remember when barqs first became big in the 90s you couldn’t find it here… I only found it in greyhound bus stations … then a few years later I tried barqs red cream soda and liked it

but anyone notice root beer is in severe disfavor in fountains? along with cherry coke ? the one dependable place I could get barqs changed it out to pibb xtra …

Also the place to go if you want to try the unreleased flavors of mountain dew is taco bell …I was in mine and got 2 free tacos for trying the grape mt dew a couple of years ago after filling out a form …

Haven’t seen any of that stuff 'round here in nearly two decades.

Had some in Chicago, although it was from a dispenser; I don’t know if it is sold in bottles.

Must be a regional thing, I have never, not even once, had a restaurant or bar serve me a Coke with lemon.

A big pitcher of iced tea and glasses full of ice goes a long way with people working out in the heat as well.

I drink diet for the same reason as Skywatcher. A couple of times a week, I stop at Sonic for a diet limeade with a flavor additive. Mango is my favorite, but blackberry or peach come in as close seconds (thirds?). One that sounded weird was diet mint limeade. Tastes kind of like a non-alcoholic mojito.

bump, are you working outside today? Angling for some refreshment, are you? Get over here, ya nut! Tea’s on me!

Around here (Minnesota) lots of Burger Kings have the Coke mix machines. I think the best Coke combination is raspberry; both the regular and diet versions are good. Coke-orange is good too, like the Spezi mentioned earlier.

It’s fun / frustrating watching the old farmers (nothing against old farmers, but…) trying to figure out the touchscreens and options. I feel more sorry for the mothers of small kids because of the options and how slow they get.

Perhaps slightly off-topic, but several weeks ago I dined for the first time at a Halo Burger (it’s a burger chain in southeast Michigan). They had Vernor’s Ginger Ale available as a fountain drink. I think that’s the first time I’ve ever seen ginger ale (in any even certainly Vernor’s brand) served that way.

Not lately, but I was thinking about being on the receiving end of said tea pitcher and ice glasses a few times as a teenager, and how heavenly it was.
