Favorite Odd Soda flavors

Just picked up a bottle of coconut flavored soda. It is the bomb. The mouthfeel is so creamy. I don’t know how they did it, but I probably don’t wanna know. Any road, it’s nomtastic. So what pleasant (or otherwise) off-the-wall soda flavors have you tried?

I like Moxie.

I do! Love the stuff.

I love Coco Rico (puerto rican coconut soda) and the Tamarind soda from the Mexican brand Jarritos. Also Sidral, which is a Mexican-made Apple soda. In the Midwest there’s Faygo Rock & Rye, I don’t know what the hell it’s supposed to taste like but it’s not bad. Somewhat cream soda-ish but there’s more going on there. I have a latent fondness for Cel-Ray (Celery soda) as a Gingerale-esque tummy settler after a huge meal. It’s quite hard to find, even in New York City. Probably because it is, objectively, disgusting.

Do not likes:
Vernor’s. No, it isn’t “too strong” in fact it tastes like nothing except sweetened wood chips.
Colombiana. It tastes sort of like bubble gum. I can see why you’d like it if you started out drinking it as a kid, but I’m not a fan. See also, Inka Cola.
Moxie. It’s like an entire old-timey drugstore exploded in my mouth.

I love Vernor’s, Faygo Rock & Rye, and Diet Cherry Chocolate Dr. Pepper.

I like malta, I hated it at first and barely managed to finish the first bottle, but I didn’t want to waste the rest of it. Over the next week I slowly drank it and became used to the odd flavors, by the end of the third bottle I was hooked.

I’ve also tried most of the stuff in the ethnic isles in our grocery stores. Ironbeer was my favorite, perhaps my favorite soda overall. It tastes like a smoother and creamier Dr. Pepper with mild fruit flavors mixed in, very delicious and refreshing. I found most of the sodas had a very similar flavor, Inca Kola seems to be the biggest of them, some people claim it tastes like bubble gum, personally I think it’s what a “candy” flavored soda would taste like. Of them Cola Champagne was my favorite, it tastes very much like Inca Kola but not quite as sweet.

Whatever melted apple lollipop flavor is used to make Green River.

Winn-Dixie’s house brand (Chek) has a good green apple soda.

I wish someone would sell a good, strong ginger beer around here (south central Georgia).

This thread would not be complete without a mention of Canfield’s Diet Chocolate Fudge Soda. As far as I know, it was never made in a non-diet version. I used to love this stuff when I was a kid. Apparently it’s still available, but I haven’t seen it in many years. I’ll have to look out for it so I can see if it’s as yummy as I remember.

Do any of your supermarkets carry Goya products in the Mexican foods section? They make a very spicy ginger beer that I like a lot.

Both of our local Publix stores carry it, I think I’ve seen it at Winn-Dixie to.

Look for AJ Stephan’s and Reed’s Extra.

A J Stephans ginger beer isn’t odd, but it is one of the best ginger beers out there.

Dry Soda makes a nice rhubarb flavor.

I like Vernor’s. Irn Bru is interesting. From what I remember about Rock & Rye, it wasn’t too weird, just Dr Pepperish maybe?

Has anyone had any of the really weird Jones Soda offerings, and liked it? All those like the Thanksgiving flavors, Brussels sprouts, etc.

I want to try Cel-Ray some day. Don’t know if I’d like it, but I’d be able to say I’ve tried it.

I came in here to mention Dr. Brown’s Cel-Ray soda, but I see I’ve been beat. You can find it around here occasionally, but not dependably.

The Izze brand has some good and unusual flavors that I like, including blueberry, blackberry, and pomegranate.

I loved Beverly, the bitter soda you can taste at the World of Coke in Atlanta.

I stopped into a local candy/obscure soda shop the other day, and couldn’t help but notice they carried Buffalo Wing Soda (link is not to the place I saw it, just the first online link to it I could find). I couldn’t quite bring myself to get it, but curiosity is getting the better of me… I may have to go back and try it. Even though I know it’s going to be awful.

Coconut Soda, on the other hand, sounds awesome.

I like Brio which is a Chinotto flavoured drink.

I like Chinotto, which is made from a type of orange but doesn’t taste like any orange I’ve ever had.

Bitter Lemon is another favorite of mine: sparkling lemonade mixed with quinine.

Manhattan Special is a really strong and overly sweet espresso soda that I find oddly irresistible, although the tiny 10-ounce bottle I see most often is more than enough. I’m sure if I bought the 28-ounce one I would absentmindedly drink it all and die shortly thereafter of grinding teeth-induced stroke.

I came in to post Diet Cherry Chocolate Dr. Pepper. It’s like drinking a Black Forest cake. All of the pleasure and zero guilt. Too bad it was only out for a limited time.
