The other awkward bit about “fanny” is that not only does it mean different things on different sides of the pond, it also has different strengths. Here in the States, “fanny” is the sort of word you wouldn’t blush to say in front of your grandmother-- It’s not nearly as crude as, say, “ass” (which itself isn’t all that crude, either).
