Cocteau Twins

My fiancee swears by heaven or las vegas. I on the other hand don’t like em’

I love Garlands and Treasure (with the Aikea-Guinea single included), ooooh, and Victorialand. And they did an album with Harold Budd called The Moon and The Melodies which is a beautiful ethereal (bordering on new age) recording.

On their last tour, they went back and reworked some of the really old stuff (Wax and Wane from Garlands) and it was BRILLIANT! I think I saw them 3 times in the '90s. I spoke to Simon after the first time and he said they would never tour with a drummer…the next 2 tours had drummers.

Treasure is an amazing recording. Purchase it immediately if you can find it. I also recommend an untitled EP with the “Aikea-Guinea”, “Kookaberra”, “Quisquose”, and “Rococo” tracts.

Then, as you become even more hooked, check out other early 4AD talents (especially “This Mortal Coil”). Finally, connect with the many excellent artists on the Projekt label. This will be music time well spent.

I just got Stars and Topsoil…a new compilation from 4AD records. It has tracks from most releases from the back catalogue from their frist, Garlands, to the last on 4AD, Heaven or Las Vegas. It is a good cross section and you can hear the change in sound over the 8 years. The tracks are laid out in chronological order. You miss their subsequent releases post-4AD (Milk and Kisses, et al.) though.

If you’ve not heard anything by them, then listen to this as an introduction to the types of sounds that they’ve created, and then go out and get the corresponding album…I think it will make for a more satisfying listen.

The problem with it is that it doesn’t flow. I found it easier to listen to an entire album of theirs than to listen to this. The change in sound and mood doesn’t translate to a good mix.
