Wal-Mart uses a series of codes for various things that can go wrong. i.e. i believe that ‘code red’ is fire and ‘code black’ is a spill of something dangerous.
‘code adam’ is used for a missing child.
It means there’s a missing child (hopefully) in the store. I assume it’s name after Adam Walsh, who’s father hosts America’s Most Wanted. Adam was abducted in a store, then murdered, IIRC.
The sign is up about 75% of the time. Does that mean that there is a missing child in WalMart about 75% of the time I visit or do they just forget to take the sign down?
Or, perhaps the sign is up all the time to tell parents they use the Code Adam “system”??
Is there anyone that has worked in a WalMart that could enlighten me?
I think that the sign is up because they want patrons to know that the store employees use Code*Adam in the event of a missing child. In theory, if you report a child missing to a store employee, they’re supposed to notify the staff and the staff is supposed to scurry to all the exits and not let anyone with kids out until the child is found, the police called, or at the least the frantic parent can say, “That’s not my kid.” I suspect they’re also supposed to check on some easy hiding places (restrooms, employee break rooms and warehouse, etc.) (I’m not a WalMart employee, BTW, but I’ve seen this on a newscast some years ago)
I’ve seen something like that apply in the mall in which my office is. A parent frantically came to the info booth to report his son missing. The woman radioed security to lock down the exits immediatly, though the alert was cancelled a few seconds later when the kid came stumbing up.
