I never heard of cafestol before my wife pointed out this article (scroll down to “Espresso Lane to High Cholesterol”) to me. This concerns me, if it’s accurate, because my coffee maker uses a “gold” filter, not paper. My cholesterol is on the high side and I drink a lot of coffee. Has anyone heard this before?
I have no idea, but I just thought of something else that needs to be deep fried.
When you get your dietary advice from Good Housekeeping, it’s time to seriously reevaluate your life
Your post inspired me to google a bit more;
It seems there may be a cholesterol raise from naturally occurring oils in coffee beans. These oils are filtered out by paper filters (drip coffee) but maybe not by metal filters (espresso)
I suppose one could argue that metal filters raise cholesterol levels; I’d ask a doctor if I was concerned about it.
…me, I’m addicted to coffee, so I’ll take it however it comes.
I’m not claiming the sky is falling… I was just under the impression that, other than a little excess caffeine, my black coffee addiction wasn’t too bad. If this report is true I may just go switch back to a paper filter machine.
Since this is GQ not IMHO how about you provide some actual facts?
Funny, your googling turned up the same information as the good housekeeping article you poo pooed in your first post.
Well, I’m not sure either about coffee beans and cholesterol. i think I may ask at a cholesterol forum i have visited if anyone know or if anyone has discussed this with a doctor. I have a heavy coffee addiction, too, and I also do have high cholesterol, so it is a concern. I’m looking for ways to lower bad cholesterol levels, not ways to raise them. but if it means giving up on coffee. . . :smack:
I’d be interested to hear what you find out. I really like my current coffee maker because it grinds the beans for me, but I can’t use paper filters with it.
Just wait a few months. I’ve seen hundreds of articles on coffee and health. Good for you, bad for you, doesn’t matter, dehydrates you, doesn’t, etc., etc. Research on coffee is a popular thing, because the scientists get free coffee. They’re not so motivated by the lure of free Brussels sprouts.
