“It’s French, bitch!”
no! call-ins would ruin it!
I also loved the “Gravitas-Off”
I thought it was hysterical. But I also think there’s a lot of room for improvement. The bit where he bitched at his stage manager wasn’t very funny. I thought it was a little too over the top. Luckily, the audience didn’t laugh either so perhaps they won’t do it much again.
If they hit a rut of doing the same stuff every night it will lose its luster quickly. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it improves.
I fell asleep right after the Daily Show. Will the Colbert Report be repeated today also?
DS at eight, CR at eight thirty tonight (at least on NYC Time Warner Cable)
I thought the first segment was hilarious and really nailed everything ridiculous about cable news pundits. The rest of the show slipped a little, but still very good. I look forward to seeing this develop, but also wonder about how long it can be sustained. I’m guessing more topical, ridiculous rants, which should be good.
Excellent, Thank You
It was ok but he really needs someone to play off of. He just can’t pull it off on his own.
too bad Stone can’t be a permanent sidekick or something
My understanding is that most of them - call-ins and audience responses from cameras allegedly placed around the country - will be phony. Meaning this ought to be comedy, not some boring crap.
According to Wikipedia, he will eventually have a liberal foil played by David Cross.
It was a great special, mocking the self-importance of cable hosts. I already never want to watch Stephen Colbert be pompous ever again.
What, it’s going to be on daily?
Oooh, that could get really awful really soon.
So let’s hope the writers start getting creative starting, uh, I don’t know, tonight.
(Did anyone but me notice that the show went so long that it cut off all the credits? Who are these writers? How many are there? When will they start cutting themselves under the pressure? Why aren’t these questions being answered on this so-called news show. huh, huh?)
Tomorrow’s guest: Mor from Or.
very cool!
Cross would be a great contrast
Actually, I thought the stage manager bit was hilarious. You could see the teleprompter over the manager’s shoulder, and the whole bit was scripted. It was a little nudge-nudge wink-wink about the supposed “off the cuff” nature of the show and media in general. It’s all scripted, even the bitching.
“…unholy galactic sexual congress.”
Works for me.
As cool as this sounds, I’d like to see the return of Even Stev/phen.
I thought the show was pretty good, especially considering that it’s just the first episode. I expected more of a shake-out period.
One thing that might be worth keeping in mind here is that there are other segments that haven’t debuted yet. They can’t roll out everything on night #1.
I love it. Good Start.
That interview with Georgia Congressman Jack Kingston was absolutely classic. I almost felt sorry for the guy. The interview format is very similar to that of The Daily Show, with lots of non sequiturs and hyperbolic statements from Colbert, leading to uncomfortable silences and bemused looks, many of which are probably edited in post-interview.
In many ways, the show is like a slightly different version of The Daily Show, and i think that the two of them together make a pretty good hour of television.
Little too much dead space in there for my taste, but it did have a nice Christopher Guest kind of a vibe. Like the Daily Show, I think the first few minutes are going to be the high point of the show for me.
Incidentally, I didn’t get it until the rerun this evening, but the walk from desk to desk is amusing. It’s done so he gets the applause while the guest just stands there in the dark. Not quite as funny as Colbert talking about humility while standing in front of a portrait of himself standing in front of a portrait of himself, but a nice subtle dig all the same.
Yeah, I got that it was silly and that we were supposed to see the prompter…I dunno, I was a stage manager for college tv and I got hollered at by some pompous douchebags. Perhaps I’m just bitter.
