It’s definitely uneven, scattershot, and hit-and-miss at the moment, but I think that’s the nature of a new show like this. They’re not really sure what’s going to work, so they try a range of stuff. (Anyone remember the first two weeks of Conan O’Brien? Genius bits alternating with truly awkward what-the-hell-was-that stuff.) Presuming they get decent enough ratings for the network to give them a few weeks of shakedown time, I’d expect the show to settle down a bit and find its groove.
The second show was MUCH better, so I’ll hang on for a while.
Still going good, but the interview segment bothers me a little. They don’t seem to be aiming for even the semi-serious interview level of The Daily Show, just kind of a bizarre semi-improv comedy interview with whatever guest. It almost seems like an Ali G-type thing where a celebrity expects a serious interview and gets something completely different. It’s funny, but I’m not sure what the guests get out of it so I wonder how long they’ll keep coming.
Anybody have a better idea on what they’re trying to accomplish there?
Seiously, are they planning on interviewing every member of the House?
I’m kinda looking forward to that.
Love this show. Not as thoughtful as TDS, but as funny; if not more so.
The Daily Show spoofs the news, and often news reporting itself. This show devotes some of its energy to spoofing the news, but it’s more through the lens of spoofing loudmouth pundits. Shows like that are more about the host’s take on the news than about the news itself. A lot of the more self-important touches are a reflection that, I think. The “what you need to know” stuff, for example.
I don’t know if anyone else read the interviews Colbert did in promoting this show - he talked to CNN and the New York Times in the couple of days before the premeire - but he always said something about the host of the Report being the same character he played on the Daily Show. After last night’s episode, I don’t think it’s quite the same. As host of CR, he’s a lot more belligerent.

I think Comedy Central has a Winner here.
With Daily show poking fun at the actual stories. It’s fun to see Colbert taking out the Newscasts of those stories. Yes, it is always gonna have Daily Show always over it. But it’s more than 30 more minutes of fake news.
Colbert seems to be PERFECT for the spot. Yes they Play up the Drama of the posing. But, the base has to be there to begin with. I’ve seen every episode.
And I like how Colbert (And his Writers… Stewart is a Writer, thats a plus) still have segments comming out. (“Tip of the Hat, Wag of the Finger” “Threat Down”, “The Word”, “Steven Settles the Debate”)
If anyone thought this show wouldn’t make it. I think they have to think again.
Saddam’s timing couldnt have been better.
I think Comedy Central has a complete package now. (David Spade’s needs to be daily also, not possible, but still) I think Comedy Central has pushed the envelope just far enough, and can substain their postion on the News market for a long time.
Well Done.
Ummmm . . .
Corrdry Did This Week in God on 10/19s show.
