Cold places to sit

Yesterday my son and I were waiting for the bus and he sat on the bench and said it was wet.
It wasn’t. It just felt thta way becasue it was so cold.
So, why do cold things feel wet?

I think it’s more along the lines of " wet things feel cold. " Someone will better be able to explain the actual physics behind this, but I used to do a lot of experiments with the water-cooling of processors, and water is an excellent medium for dissipating heat, even when it’s not all that cold. So if you sit on a dry surface that’s really cold, since it’s so rapidly drawing heat way from your body, it could feel like something wet, which would also draw that heat away as rapidly, at an even higher temperature. That’s in layman’s terms anyway…

Water is a good conductor so when it comes into contact with your skin it draws heat and causes a sensation of cold. Just pour some really cold water on your hand and see whether it feels more like cold than wet.

So your son sits on the cold bench and his butt sends a signal saying that it’s cold. His brain processes this information and through his own experience he mistakenly concludes that he’s wet.

It has a lot to do with personal experience and how we process information. If I sit on a cold bench I will get the same signals as your son but I will know that it is because of cold and not moisture.

We have a lot of cold benches here so no I’ll be out there today confirming my WAEG. (Wild ass educated guess)

Feynn: LOL, I will tell him his butt sends signals. He’ll love it!
