I’m not sure if I should ask this here, but I will anyway.
What is fundamentally wrong with the trolls/sock-puppeteers? Why do some people deliberately register and post with no better justification than a perverse desire to irritate other people?
I lurk much more than I post, because I learned a long time ago that “listening before speaking” and “reading before writing” was actually beneficial.
I can not, for the life of me, understand why anyone would find pointless muckraking or unsupported personal attacks a useful employment of bandwidth.
Are they just pissed off because most of the people who post here are smarter than they (and I am for that matter) are? Or, is it that they just really have nothing better to do with their time?*
Sorry for the misplaced hijack (and how’s that for redundant?), but I’m getting tired of this kind of crap.*

I think they just do it because they like seeing people upset. I mean, it’s annoying if you’re a mod, and it’s annoying if you’re trying to have a serious conversation, but it is somewhat amusing to watch.

However, I have no idea why someone would ever double post.
The first time, perhaps.
But if, after seeing dozens of them, you realise that one person is doing most of the trolling, you can’t help but feel sorry a bit. I mean, here’s a person willing to go through the entire registration process, using a false e-mail address, only to see a “controversial” name on the front page for a couple of minutes.
A person who has registered hundreds of e-mail addresses at the same 2, 3 shady webmail sites in order to get a valid username that’s invariably shot down within 10 posts. And in a ot of cases, to see all posts disappear because we remove them from the public eye.
A person who’s been doing this for months, if not years.
I don’t know what we did to piss him/her off: if there’s one thing I’ve learned here, it’s that you can’t please everyone. And I don’t particularly care what lit the fuse on this thickheaded individual, either.
I sometimes just think about that lonely room, and all the spare time this person has already invested in something completely fruitless. Surely, it’s time that could have been used more constructively. I don’t know, by picking up roadside trash or something.

Yeah, you’re right. I was talking more about generic trolls. You know, the people who go on Christian message boards and say they worship Satan, or Jewish boards and say Hitler was right, or who go on boards dedicated to neo-institutionalism in current political though and trumpet rational choice (admittedly, that’s a higher class of troll, but…)
However, if someone, once someone is banned from a message board and comes back repeatedly for years, that’s gone from trolling to obsessing, and the person probably needs mental help.
