Powell’s favorable rating is lower among African Americans than Whites. Why?

I would say that the reason why is that Colin Powell is a Republican and the blacks are predominantly Democrats.
puddleglum, has Powell actually stated that he is a member of the Republican Party? As of a few years ago, he refused to claim any party affiliation.
Regardless of partisanship, Powell seems conservative and doesn’t seem to wear his political views on his sleeve. This seems to bother some people (not that this really answers the OP.)
Yes, he has. He had a news conference in (I think) late 1995 to announce that he would not run for President in 1996. At the same time he called himself a “Rockefeller Republican.”
Most blacks don’t trust those who think and follow their own agenda, politically. Powell has gotten a lot of flak for going his own way and succeeding without help from anyone. I guess that’s why he gets all the flak.
The self annointed black leaders (Jackson, Sharpton, Farakhan) don’t like black people who succeed without their help. You see, if Blacks were indeeed as successful as Jackasson and co. claim to want, then there would be no need for them. Without oppression, racism, and discrimination, then they are out of a job.
Powell is a Republican but is a rather liberal one. The Christian Right would have a serious problem accepting him as a Presidential candidate.

Skeleton Closet lists “helped cover up the My Lai Massacre” for Powell, but has pulled down their site discussing him. Anyone care to confirm/refute?

I agree with Oblong. The wannabe leaders of black society (Jackson, Sharpton, et al) despise Powell because he became sucessful without any help from them. Even worse, he gets along with white people. Sharpton, Farakhan, and others of their ilk want violence, discontent, and racial division. That’s the source of their power and influence.
I saw a post somwhere, I think it was an earlier SD thread, where Powell claimed no knowledge of Mai Lai in his book. That’s what he said at least.
