I was watching the Simpsons and Homer and Bart are collecting coins, with the sole purpose of getting the coins so they can have the book filled up and never have to look at it again
I have known people that will buy pre-labled spice racks and then go out and buy the spices, even though they never use them just because they want to have the collection of spices completed.
I also new a man who wanted to have every number one single on Billboard’s Hot 100 so he bought the CDs just so he could get those, even though most of the #1 songs he disliked.
I have done similar things with CDs though never to that extreme.
So my question is:
Are there things you collect just for the sole purpose of having the complete collection. Or pehaps on a bit of a twist, something like, I read “Mr Smith’s” non-fiction book even though I only like his fiction novels, just so I could say I’ve read them all.
Perhaps you went out of your way on a trip from Maryland to Pennsylvania and took the mile out of your way, just so you could say you’ve been in West Virginia. (I know a lot of people have a goal to visit every state in the USA)
I have a few DVDs in my collection. I bought them because they starred a favorite actor, but I have yet to get around to watching them.
There is one author whose books I collect. I have all of her books except one. But the bookstore only carries that one in paperback, and I have all of the others in hardcover, so I have not yet bought that one. How’s that for OCD?
I feel compelled to have certain items of clothing and jewelry in every available color, even if I might not wear them. I think it dates back to my childhood, when I was mesmerized by pads of colored construction paper and sets of felt pens.
My father once detoured about 10 miles out of his way to Arkansas, just to complete his set of all 50 states visited.
I once won second prize in a sweepstakes, and received Season 2 of The Dead Zone on DVD. Although I enjoyed the show, I don’t think I would have chosen to purchase all 6 seasons, but I couldn’t just have Season 2 sitting on the shelf by itself…
I collected baseball cards in my teens and spent a fair ammount of money on cards of players I had never heard of in order to complete a set from a given year.
I’m hoping Sue Grafton will live long enough to complete her Kinsey Milhone series (A is for Alibi, etc.). And since I was very young, I’ve wanted to have rings with every major gemstone - diamond, ruby, emerald, pearl, sapphire, opal, peridot, topaz, amethyst…I have quite a collection except for the oddball watermelon tourmaline, or whatever else things QVC invents!
In 2000, Johnny Lightning issued a set of diecast cars that came with matching Monopoly tokens. They did this for 4 years. I have all 93 cars and tokens, all in the package, that were issued.
On a related note, I have the tokens from about 112 different Monopoly games and 73 complete games. I have every token ever issued in all versions of the standard Monopoly game. There have been over 300 versions of Monopoly made, the odds of collecting every token is slim and none. This doesn’t include the 100 or so private versions made for employees and such that were never made available to the general public.
Since Crayola began producing wax crayons, they have made crayons with 673 different colors. Close to 500 were sold by Crayola in various boxes and containers, the rest were made for other companies, most as promotional items or in the case of restaurants, something for the kids to play with while waiting for their meal. I am at 590 colors and counting. I recently paid $55 for a box of 6 Crayola crayons. They were made in Crayola Canada for Heinz catsup and were included free on bottles of catsup sold in the Maritime provinces only. Who else has a Lobster red or Blue crab colored crayon? I do.
