College Football 2013 Week 1

Not looking good for my Bullydogs. Starting QB Tyler Russell left the game and may have a concussion. Still down 14-3, starting the 4th quarter…

Meanwhile, in Atlanta, the Tide is rolling, up 14-0 on VT. Bama stuffed VT’s first drive, then returned the punt for a TD.

Once we started calling the game for Walsh, things got a lot better.

Tough loss for my Bullydogs. Could be a long year, as the schedule is brutal for them.

Bama up 28-10 at the half, with only one offensive TD. Two on special teams–Christian Jones has returned a punt and a kickoff for TDs, and the defense scored another.

Arkansas 34-14 against Louisiana Lafayette

Nice win and a good start under Brett Bielema. Anxious now to see how they do in a conference game.

Jesus Christ, I’m tired of hearing about Manziel! I’m watching other games, and that still all they are talking about!

Its gonna be a long season…

(My team won on Thursday! )

Manziel is college football’s new Tebow. He’s gonna be pretty lonely with his own ego because God isn’t on his side.

Clemson beat GA. I picked GA to win, but I wasn’t comfortable with the pick. Clemson looked pretty good tonight, especially late in the game.

Not a good weekend for the SEC in OOC games. Miss State, GA, and KY lost.

It’s time for irrationally early hypotheticals (for anyone who wants to play):

Let’s say Georgia wins the rest of their games. Clemson and Louisville go undefeated. Everyone else has at least 1 loss. Who plays for the NCG?

Hypothetical #2: Same as above except that Ohio State and Oregon also go undefeated. Now who?

If Clemson and Louisville go undefeated, and everyone else has one loss, Clemson plays the SEC Champion for the BCS Championship.

If the SEC Champion has one loss, and two other BCS Conference Champions are undefeated, the undefeated BCS Conference Champions play for the BCS Championship.

? Louisville is in the AAC which is, this year, an automatic BCS conference.

Not that I think you’re wrong, but it’s inconsistent with the second half of your last sentence.

I’m glad the four team playoff is coming so we can finally end the SEC-only “one free loss” rule.

Both situations? Two SEC teams. Probably Alabama in the 2nd slot.

The only specific rule in a situation like this is the one that says that if the officials stopped the clock because of an injured player, that player must be taken out of the game for at least one play (unless his team calls a timeout).

There is a separate section of the rules that have “guidelines for concussions,” with a recommended four-step process if a player is suspected of having a concussion (remove the player; have him evaluated by a health care professional with experience in evaluating concussions; do not let the player back into the game without that health care professional’s approval; have a contingency plan for a situation where the player needs to rest for the remainder of the game), but these are recommendations, not hard and fast rules.

In high school, a player who is knocked unconscious cannot return to the game without an M.D.'s approval.

I did not realize that.

Thank you for the information. I think a guy that gets knocked out should be done for the game.

The Georgia Clemson game was really good. Thats an old rivalry between two schools that are less than a 100 miles apart. Clemson’s defense did a good job in controlling the game. They’ll be a fun team to watch this season.

Well, the debut of Jameis Winston could have gone better. I mean, two missed passes? Jeez.

Yeah, it was Pitt (a team that is getting better, but ain’t there yet), but still. Good lord that was an impressive performance. The offense is loaded, now if Jimbo can give them the game plan, it could be a great year. Nice to finally see an FSU team that remembers that the TE is an eligible receiver.

A little less impressed with our defense. Man, we miss those big edge rushers. We created some pressure, but it always took a LB or CB helping out. And the secondary looked soft to me - a better offense could cause serious trouble back there.

All in all though - 1-0 with a fairly impressive win. Good week 1 for my 'Noles.

Meanwhile, out on the West Coast in a game that ended at 1:00 AM eastern…

Some interesting things to come out of Northwestern defeating Cal (not an upset).

An example of the targeting rule/player ejection (and since it occurred in the 2nd half, the player (Cal’s Chris McCain) was suspended for half of the next game). Watching it in real time (and through blue and gold goggles) it didn’t even seem like it deserved a penalty, much less an ejection: a good clean not-late hit. The ref announced that it was being reviewed…and then 10 seconds later, said that “the ruling was confirmed”. Well, it turns out, not quite. The replay wasn’t working. Pac-12 officials took a look at replays today and overturned the suspension.

Cal’s new offense under Sonny Dykes (“Bear Raid”) is fun. We may not win many games this year – we have the 2nd-toughest schedule in the country, and also the 2nd-youngest team in the country – but they’ll be entertaining, and will surprise somebody.

Not so much fun for the Northwestern defense, though, who reacted in the predictable way: by flopping. Three straight plays in the 3rd quarter resulted in time outs while a DL was “attended to” on the field. Ironically, Cal did this to Oregon 3 years ago. Karma’s a bitch; but on the other hand, we know what bad acting looks like.

Cal started a true freshman QB, who wound up throwing 63 times for 445 yards (#2 in school history). Not a bad debut.

Later than that! I left the bar right after the game and it was well after 1 AM Central time.

That was a good game, and your freshman QB is special. I wish NU could have put a little more pressure on him. NU may have a good year, but only if that defense tightens up a bit. They got lucky with those two deflected pick-6’s that made up the final margin in the game. I’ll cut the offense a bit of slack since one of their starting QBs went out of the game after two plays, so they were limited to half their offensive playbook. Still, one more ineffectual run up the middle for 1.5 yards on first down would have had me throwing something at the TV.

It helps that NU has one of the best theater departments in the country :). I don’t blame NU for taking advantage of the rule, but as a fan, it would be nice if the rules could curtail some of that kind of strategy.

Overall a nice late-night road win for NU against a decent team in a major conference. Up next they have three games at home against teams that should not give them a lot of trouble and then a bye week before opening the Big10 season against Ohio State in Evanston. That could be a big game.

As you can imagine, there’s been a great deal of righteous indignation on the Cal boards, and a few thoughtful proposals. The best one I’ve heard: if a player needs an injury time-out to get off the field, that player can’t return for the rest of that series. Seems reasonable and I don’t see a downside.

They don’t want players legitimately injured to stay on the field; head injuries.
I could see until the next set of downs being adopted.
