Color-blindness

Up until today, my girlfriend was unaware she was color-blind.
She noticed my bracelet was indeed purple, and not blue as she had previously thought, which led to a discussion about how this was a common problem for her, and I quizzed her on several objects around the room (well…I more or less teased her about it). After a few minutes of this I finally made her go online and take several color blind tests. Sure enough, the results were consistant with red-green color blindness. It was odd because I would sit there and trace out the shape and number and she still wasn’t able to see, however if I pointed out a specific dot she could tell it was a different color after a little bit of concentration. What’s even odder is that she was previously unaware she was color-blind, which makes me wonder how exactly color-blind people see. Do certain colors appear grey? Do they appear as other colors? This confuses me!

May I humbly suggest…

May I humbly suggest that you never ask one of us colorblind folks, “What color is this? And this? How about this?”

Don’t worry, Monty, the only person I really would do that to is my girlfriend, and that’s sort of a way we show affection for each other…teasing and/or making fun of each other

First of all, there a several different kinds of colorblindness (which you might have picked up on those website or might not)

Since your girlfriend lived many years without being aware of her colorblindness, most likely she has some perception of all colors, but some of those colors are off.

In my case, a lot what other folks see as “green” I see as blue or yellow or brown. Grass is definitely green, but my winter coat is brown to me and green to most other folks.

Definitely check out the other thread SkipMagic linked to - it covers a lot of ground and had a number of colorblind folks check in and talk about their perceptions.
