Of course, guys, “geeky Dilbert losers” was used with all affection, as it’s a fair description of me, too.
drop,
I have seen quite a few non Dilbert looking computer geeks out there.
Hey, I am not your typical computer geek – I am not a Dilbertesque woman computer geek. Now if I could only get rid of the tape on my glasses and the pig tails…
No pyramidal hair like Alice? No, you are nothing like the “type.” OTOH, archetypes like Dilbert are based on reality.
Hey! Anybody out there know the REAL reason engineers wear short-sleeved white shirts like Dilbert? It has nothing to do with computers!
Jokes and professional slurs aside, a lot of geeks clean up real nice. But they need to find something to wear other than that dark, charcoal gray suit that is the uniform today. And somebody HAS to tell them that you DON’T wear that between Memorial and Labor Days. LIGHT colors, boys!
HUH? Where do you live?
In my area most of the fellow computer geeks I know wear Dockers and golf shirts or long sleeve button up shirts in the winter.
Of course this is Colorado and you can go to a five star restaurant in your jeans.
Damn, I am only 29.
In public, including trade shows, and especially the higher ranking ones and those looking for work, they have adopted the classic IBM uniform. Pretty depressing. The geek job fairs I used to go to looked like funerals.
I’m seeing more suits and fewer sockless deck shoes on the job, too. Computer pros seem to be moving against the casual current. Maybe it’s to legitimize the profession.
That is the uniform for both coasts and every company I have been to. I think the polyester floods and pocket protectors went out in the late 80s, before the ponytailed faze of the early 90s.
