It doesn’t actually say he fired across the road, or that anyone saw him fire across the road.

“Across the road” could describe where the subject was standing when he fired his shotgun. Also, keep in mind that this is a statement from McLennan County Sheriff Larry Lynch.
I am typing this on 17th street in Washington DC. Although not my preferred choice of syntax, I could say “The President tossed his cookies across the street”.
I suppose there should be a comma after cookies. That’s probably what was missing in the quote from the Sheriff.
Dude, don’t use the term “White Trash” when you are talking about white trash. Instead use the secret code words:

That way you can say it right in front of them and they won’t know it! I’ll bet the first cop on scene with this asshole shooting his gun radioed into HQ “No problems, here guys. It’s just a Whiskey Tango situation. A guy is getting ready for dove season.”
My first instinct is to say: “yes, please stop voicing your opinions.” But then I realized that you probably deserve an honest answer and have done nothing to deserve me being a dick to you. So I will do that instead.
My take is that at some point along the line the term white trash has become one of those SDMB sacred cows (sort of like fat people, de-clawing cats and a few others). The moment you see it come up, you can count on the thread going south as one person protests, another tries to justify the term and then off we go! So, while I can understand why some folks might object to the term, I was just posting in the hope that we could short-circuit the process.

The thing is, there are some people who are offended deeply by the term. We have no recourse other than to note that whenever it comes up in hopes of either educating the offender, or becoming such a nuisance that using the term is not worth the effort. The only other option is to let it stand unchallenged, which serves neither purpose.
I agree that threads sometimes go south when the subject comes up. Were the term never used, of course, that would never happen. You will note that I have altered my tactics, I hope.
And here I was just pokin’ fun at the California guy for automatically assuming the Texas guy was “white trash” since he was drinkin’ a beer and shootin’ a gun and all that stoopid stuff that cool people from California never do.
Chill. I’m just saying that I didn’t know that “White Trash” is one of the sacred SDMB cows. Gays, Obesity, Declawing Cats, etc, are all definitely on my “forbidden to mention without a massive landslide of shit” list. I’ll have to add white trash as well.
