How are comic books dealing with WTC? I imagine that most of them are still in their production backlog, but they must be in the process of producing new stories. DC doesn’t set many of its stories in NYC but Marvel does. Comics tend to suspend time but real-world events do intrude (changing presidents, for example). But including WTC will very clearly demarcate everything into before and after a specific date.
I would imagine that they’d have to deal with it one way or the other. For example I can imagine that in Ultimate Spider-Man we might see our favorite web head trying to save people after the flight crashes. Not to mention other heroes based out of New York such as the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and Daredevil. Hell, maybe we’ll see the Punisher taking out some terrorist swine in a few months. Actually he just took out an island full of terrorist in the last issue. But that was completely unreleated to WTC.

I read in the NY Times that Marvel is putting out a Spiderman special in November. It will be drawn by John Romita Jr. ('fraid I don’t recall the writer) They had an interview with JR jr. and showed the pencil work for one splash panel. It showed Spidey shouldering a girder while Cyclops cut it off with his optic blast. They were working along side FDNY.
They showed JR jr.'s studio, where he has news clippings pinned up all over the place. They had a quote from the writer, who said that he had a lot of trouble starting the script. He said he spent the entire afternoon thinking that there are no words to describe the event. He had his breakthrough when he decided “There are no words” would be the first sentence. After that, he wrote it in an hour.
They also had a quote from Spiderman. Replying to someone who asked why the superheroes didn’t prevent the attack. Spidey said, “We will always be vulnerable to madmen, because we can’t go to the place they go to think up these acts.” or words to that effect.
Too bad they can’t repair buildings in real life as fast as they can in comic books.
That’s because we don’t have Damage Control in real life. They could have the WTC rubble cleaned up and two new towers built inside of a week.
I loved that series…
Unless it’s changed in teh last couple of years, both Green Lantern and the latter-day JSA are based in New York. I’m sure they’d have some reaction.
Green Lantern especially, being a dumbass, would probably spend half the issue searching for the space aliens that he thinks did it. This could be quite poignant if done right.
The Amazing Spider-Man mentioned above is being written by the current series writer, J. Micheal Strazynski (sp?). (Yes, the Babylon 5 guy.) Most comics aren’t really dealing with it – many creators were interviewed shortly after, and they were simply at a loss as to how to even approach it. Presumably over the next several months the war will become a part of the comics settings the same way that other wars have in the past. Also there are several benefit books coming out. (Actually, the first one, Marvel’s HEROES is on the stands right now – I encourage everyone to go pick one up. The proceeds go to disaster relief in NYC.) Also, Marvel is putting an illustrated red, white and blue ribbon on the cover of all its comics, possibly for as much as the next year. CrossGen comics is printing a flag on all its covers this month.
