Comic books you thought were terrible as a kid

Yeah, I got into Uncanny just a little before that, I still think that the Australia/faked death time was one of the better eras of the title.

So… Little Dot has OCD; Little Audrey is “cloud-cuckoo crazy.” I suppose Little Lotta has some kind of binge eating disorder. Wow, no wonder these characters didn’t make it into the 21st Century.

And Caspar was dead.

Yes, yes he was.

Thank you for that! (“You’re raped my childhood!”) Nah, you’ve just given me a good giggle!

I never noticed until now that the writer was Marv Wolfman and the artist was Marie Severin (both prolific and famous Marvel creators). Cool!

I disliked Marvel because with every gorram issue it seemed like you needed to buy 3 other comics.

“Hey, Spidey’s taking a real beating from Doc Ock in this issue!
Oh, wait, it’s continued in next month’s Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spiderman.
Dammit, this month’s Peter Parker is continued in next month’s Doctor Strange!”

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
I really disliked this book when flipping through in the bookstore as a kid. The art was ugly, Batman looked old and fat, and it was shocking to see a deformed doll/child calling a girl Robin, “Bitch.” Read it later as a teen and thought it was
the best Batman story ever.

1963 by Alan Moore
I was buying all the Image #1’s as a young teenager. Bought the first issue of 1963 and recognized it as a Fantastic Four homage but I didn’t give it a chance since I never liked the Fantastic Four or Jack Kirby, and it was on cheap paper with dumb looking characters. I re-read it a couple years ago and it was amazing! Tracked down the subsequent issues and couldn’t believe how fun and inventive it was.

Batman Adventures
Based on the Fox Kids series. Thought these were just Batman-lite comics but it turns out they had better stories than the regular titles at time.

Valiant Comics
Dismissed these comics as the un-cool version of Image Comics. I thought the art was very plain and the superheroes not very flashy looking. The stories though were so much better than Image at the time and leaned more towards SF.

Spider-man 2099
Thought the art was bad, coloring was bad, and I didn’t like the cyberpunk time period. Turns out this series was just as good, and some times better, than Amazing Spider-man. Not Spectular though. DeMatteis was making classic stories with his collaborator Sal Buscema.
