Comic strips that you wish would just fade away.

And getting back to the OP, I’m surprised no one’s mentioned The Wizard of Id.

Whoops. Didn’t get rid of smilies on that last post. Those faces are supposed to be :(open parenthesis)

I mourn the loss of Gary Larsen especially.

Gary Larsen died? When?

Worse than that! Gary Larson retired!

I can’t believe that noone has mentioned Marmaduke yet… Yech!

And there is a couple of “computer” related comics in pages of my local Ottawa papers as of late… All crap.

Noooo! Nooooo! He’s still alive, but left the grind of publishing “The Far Side” regularly.

The only thing that gets me through is my yearly Far Side desk calendar.

Sorry, I wasn’t clear. He’s still alive, just not available to me in the daily newspaper anymore.

Maybe I’m just being picky here, folks, but the thread’s title includes the phrase, “would just fade away.” Family Circus shouldn’t just fade away. Someone should call in a nuclear strike against that aggressively insipid piece of shit. The irony is, while it touts “family values,” it’s a screaming advertisement for abortion and infidelity. I mean, who would want to live in their mind-numbing hell of a universe anyway?
Rex Morgan, M.D. should die on the operating table.
B.C., as many have mentioned, is no longer anything but “I Was a Stone-Age DittoHead.”

Hey, I kind of like Mutts. Yesh, I do.

You MUSHT be kidding.

Speaking of Marmaduke:

The same people who did The Dysfunctional Family Circus did a short (10-panel) treatment of Marmaduke, too. They called it That’s One Dysfunctional Dog!. The captions usually ran along the lines of, “Holy Jesus batfuck, that’s one big fucking dog!”

Unfortunately, I don’t know if it’s archived anywhere. :frowning:

Our paper runs a number of worthless cartoons, among them “Luann” (do you like my hair? do you? do you?) and “Lola” (I’m a cranky, rude old lady who smokes cigars!). And “For Better or For Worse” is really starting to bug me. Every day is a huge life lesson from Lynn Johnston.

B.C. The comic strips are such a wonderful medium for pushing Christian “values” on their audience. I think the most inspirational characters are Fat Broad and Cute Chick.

I don’t know much about Funky Winkerbeam because my local paper only runs the Sunday strips. There is no reason for it to be there. The strips make absolutely no sense because you need to read the daily strips to get the plot.

Your name is Cecilweed you goddamn animal. I ought to beat you with a rusty rake behind the shed. Get off the shed! For the love of god get off the shed. Oh, I’m really trippin here, I think my hands are made of wood. Have a feel Jeffy me lad.

(hope I got that right–for the half-dozen or so people that will “get” it–I’m quoting from memory.)
sigh I miss the DFC…

Strips that need to die, die, die: Cathy, Marmaduke, Frank & Ernest, The Lockhorns, Mary Worth, Mallard Fillmore, Ziggy, BC, Wizard of Id, Blondie.

I kinda like Garfield, not in a oh-that’s-funny kind of way, but more of a sentimental, favorite childhood strip kind of way.

I like Get Fuzzy. I really honestly do.

I skip Marmaduke because it’s always the same non-joke: Big dogs are messy.

I skip Mary Worth on general principles.

I skip Peanuts because every joke is repeated endlessly, and now it can only get more so.

Has anyone seen Go?

It’s a movie. The only reason it’s relevant is because at the end a few people discuss the comics. One says he can’t read them any more because of the Family Circus, it just spoils everything for him “You know, at the back of your mind, that it’s sitting down there, just waiting to suck.”

I like Get Fuzzy.

For Better or For Worse. Excuse me, Lynn, but could you do a funny one every now and again? Yes, I know it’s touching that a 6 year old can occasionally come up with a ridiculously profound statement. Thank you. Now stop.

Does anyone here read Red Meat?

I do! I do!

It’s kind of an odd comic for me. I’m usually disappointed with a lot of them, but then when I least expect it, something completely ‘out there’ and sadistic will pop up and make me bust a gut.

My least favorite comic is this deal in our paper called ‘Six Chix’. bleah. It’s another one of those cliche female interest comics, except condensed into one panel.

Dennis the Menace is funny occasionally, but I keep waiting for the day when Mr. Wilson snaps and puts a cap in the kid’s ass.

My favorite comics are web-only. Ozy and Millie by…David Simpson I believe?

And also ‘Sinfest’ and ‘Bruno the Bandit’ (Don’t remember the URL for Bruno)

www.ozyandmillie.com
www.sinfest.net

All of my favorite comics are web comics, and yes Ashtar, David Simpson does Ozy and Millie. ( Ozy’s step father Llwellan(sp) is a hoot, a dragon in victorian clothing. )

Garfield’s next book should be Garfield gets Neutered[u/], and the book after that Garfield gets FLV.

Keep the soaps! It keeps the old folks quiet.

Bill Keane should be forced to take LSD, so that we can get a real circus.

Peanuts should be allowed to fade into the sunset gracefully and beautifully. It should be allowed to end.

Hagar the Horrible should have died with Dik Browne, his kids couldn’t do daring cutting edge humor if Hagar’s sword was pressed against their backs. All they can do is cutesy…badly.

Mort, Retire Allready!!!

For Better or Worse is a great strip that serves ikts purpose: condensing the life of a realistic family and its problems they encounter in a 3-panel strip. No other current comic strip does it better.

Garfield had its day as a strip. Jon Davis should concentrate on his always well-done specials.

Mallard Fillmore is funny more not than often. Lack of style and its void of emotion drains any substance it has reflecting the conservative view.

Peanuts will stay around for at least the next 2 generations, because all other strips of today are derivatives of the Charles Schultz strip.

Ziggy needs to be dragged out in the back and shot… bury his body next to Jon, Garfield, and Odie.

I miss The Far Side and Calvin and Hobbes…

Was never good: mallard, baby blues, marmaduke, dennis, boondocks, big picture.

was good, but no more: cathy, BC, overboard, peanuts, garfield, family circus.

dr paparika- somebody is still running Tank?- that used to be good.
