The series started off OK - Geena Davis is good and the premise of the show is good.
But the most recent episode has given me pause.
Her kids are driving me nuts. It is the First Family, not the Beverly Hillbillies. I come from a political family and trust me, none of the nonsense would go on, or be allowed. “They were making fun of dad!” - get over it you stupid wimp…what do you expect when your family is in the news day and night. “Gee, if I accept Commissioner of Baseball, my son sure would be proud.” Oh please…the fact that his mother is President of the United States is just a notch above Secretary of the PTA? And the agony of being the first male spouse of a President…get a grip. Re-invent the role- no wonder your kids think you are a wuss.
I understand that creatively, there should be stories about the family, but they are making the entire family run around and pretend they are really just a normal suburban family with a fancy address. At this point in the game, I believe those kids would have had a little day-long seminar with the Secret Service, and with a few people in protocol, and told that if they didn’t get their act together, there was a military school in Alaska that had their applications on hold.
The only reason I will watch another episode is for Donald Sutherland and see how he and Geena interact. But if this show keeps focusing on the agony of not being able to the high school homecoming dance because the Secret Service won’t carry pom poms, I am outta here.
I’m afraid you’re right. It’s a lot more soap opera-y/90210-y than “The West Wing,” but I still (mostly) like it. I agree that the First Gentleman needs to get a grip. The first thing he could do is fire his snippy, perpetually eyebrow-raised chief of staff.
At least (finally!) the former First Lady is going to move out. Don’t let the U-Haul door hit your ass on the way out, honey…
By the way, on Tuesday’s episode I thought the president was authorizing the torture of the terrorism suspect. All she said was “I don’t want to hear that he was tortured,” which I understood to mean that she never wanted to know what they did, or she didn’t want to hear about it from the meda, so make sure the story never leaks. Perhaps the POTUS was pissed because the Donald Sutherland character learned about what happend?
In general, the show comes off as The West Wing lite.r.
Somebody pointed out that this show is trying to be about the President of the United States but doesn’t want to be about politics. Which would be like trying to make a show about the Pope and not having any religious issues mentioned.
The President of the United States is not an ordinary person. He (or she) has built their life around politics. Pretending otherwise just makes your show seem fake.
“Mackenzie Allen, I know Jed Bartlet. I watched Jed Bartlet for many years and I’m a fan of Jed Bartlet. And you are no Jed Bartlet.”
They should have been making it their life’s goal to be as much unlike West Wing as possible and still be a show about the POTUS. Being a weak WW is a one-way ticket to cancellation.
Agreement with all concerned. The approach they take makes for some rather eye-popping moments, like when she fired the Attorney General. They made it look like firing a burger flipper at McDonalds, when in fact, even if such a capricious firing were to take place, the AG would not have turned and walked out the door, but would have been escorted out by the Secret Service. Suppose she goes by her office and does something underhanded or damaging to computer files or paperwork or whatever. It needs to improve fast, or I’m out too.
