The only sad thing about the death of Jim Morrison is that it didn’t happen before he was famous. Same for James Dean.

You’re not the only one. It took me longer to figure out that nobody writing those ditzy scripts had any clue what the hell was going on, though. I watched it for two seasons before the creeping feeling of reading the first 100 pages of a novel that some high school kid stayed up all night to turn in for extra credit was just too strong to keep ignoring.
My wife still loves the show. I keep meaning to “catch up” on the episodes she has seen that I haven’t, so we can watch it together again, but holy crap. I just can’t do it!
