Common Core Initiative and "re-imagining history"

What the heck is my Tea Party leaning co-worker worked up about? I went to the Common Core home page and couldn’t find what he was talking about. I assume it’s something he read about on Facebook or some RW email forward. I didn’t find anything on Snopes.
Anyone know what this is about?

Eh, a little more Googling leads me to believe someone mixed up This Book and the Common Core Initiative.

I can’t wait for tomorrow morning!

Da gummint insisted on it, therefore it must be offensive and oppressive to Right Thinking People.

Not that I have any respect for Common Core; it’s just further consolidation of teaching to the tests in place of real education.

All I know about Common Core is what I got from skimming the website this morning. It seems to focus a lot on critical thinking skills and evaluating sources of information. That’s kind of the opposite of teaching to the test.

Well I’m not a right-winger but the actual implementation of CCS is driving me crazy right now because they’re pushing language skills in Math assignments for my third grade daughter. She is language delayed by about two years and she went from last year being the best math student in her grade level to failing her first six weeks this year. She gets modification in Language Arts to help her with her delay but when it comes to math she has to figure out complicated … sometimes ridiculously over-complicated application problems with too much added information that distracts her from the actual problem she needs to focus on and there’s no modifications for her. She is falling behind already and I’m afraid it’s just going to get worse. We were told at the orientation meeting this year that this is how they would be handling Common Core Standards. I have an IEP meeting coming up to address this specifically, but even if she gets modifications, what about other children who may be great with math but poor with language arts but don’t qualify for special services?

I should explain that she’s being graded in Language Arts as well as math when it comes to the CCS assignments. They have all these new programs with Thinklab and CCS work and almost daily daily AR tests that all seem to combine the points on the Tennessee common core standards.

The implementation is, in nearly every case, shoehorned into TTTT.Our schools can’t handle anything else any more and everything is driven by aggregate school scores. Calling it “critical thinking” instead of “regurgitate the preformatted bits you were taught by rote” just sounds better.
