Common sense reasonable gun laws

You are asking for a level of responsibility that we do not see in any other area. You are asking for SPECIAL responsibility that holds all gun owners responsible for the actions committed by criminals that do not pay into the insurance fund.

Meh, they’re OK. He’s enforcing the law and perhaps expanding the scope of the law beyond where it has been in the past but frankly I am pretty solidly in favor of doing things to keep guns out of the hands of prohibited persons.

But then again I support licensing and registration so it shouldn’t surprise you.

Actually, the laws are nowhere near as vigorous as you seem to imagine.

For example, a couple of years ago a man in Missouri was carrying his concealed-carry gun in his jacket pocket. It fell out, discharged, and shot another man in the back. Prosecutors could find nothing in Missouri law that imposed any criminal penalty for negligence with a firearm leading to bodily injury. Cite.

In Florida, a man showing off a weapon to a potential purchaser accidentally discharged the gun; the bullet went through a wall and killed a woman in the next room. Hannah Kelley was 20; Pinellas County law enforcement couldn’t find anything to charge her killer with either, because there’s no law that says you have to handle a weapon safely or responsibly.

While civil judgements might have been obtainable in either case, obtainable != collectible.

So, in both cases there was a accident, but you want the person who had the accident to go to prison- *because it was a gun. *

Would you put all people who cause car accident in prison? Industrial accidents?

Every time a accident occurs and a person dies- then prison?

We generally don’t send people to jail for accidents unless it is the result of gross negligence or willful misconduct.

For mere negligence you have to settle for suing the guy for money, whether the defendant has any money to pay a settlement is another matter and not really relevant if your goal is to make gun owners accountable for their own actions. What the proposed idea is doing is making gun owners accountable for the actions of others, mostly criminals.
