To expand on what others have said, straykat, I don’t see how the Resurrection of christ could fail to be the point, since that’s what the Eucharist is: the remembering, re-enacting, and sharing of Christ’s death and resurrection.
Perhaps your friend (and perhaps Brian himself) misunderstood the meaning of the Eucharist. I don’t fault anyone for that–especially as a non-Christian, the young man had no reason to know what the Eucharist means, and it was not the right time for the bishop to disabuse him of whatever ideas about it he had.
As someone who does know much of what the Eucharist is, I find it…odd that it would be used by a non-believer as a way of honoring a believer. But I know that even among devout Christians, many people misunderstand the Eucharist, and that your friend’s intentions were pure.
