Audiobooks.com is like Netflix for audiobooks.
I find they make a drive go by - I get bored of the radio after a bit.
Thank you so much for telling me this. I had no idea there were audiobook subscription services.
There’s also Audible.com. (note: I think audiobooks.com might be streaming, not downloads, but I’m not sure).
Currently, my work commute is less than ten minutes, but I went to school ~80 miles from my house and chose to live at home my final year. I chose to commute for financial and emotional reasons: I didn’t want to take another loan for dorm costs and if I lived at home I could still work my part time job, and when I lived at school I had catapulted into deep depression that had only recently resolved. The drive was about an hour and a half each way on the NJ and PA Turnpikes.
I LOVED it. I had to wake up earlier so I would get to my 9 am classes on time, I overdrafted my checking account several times so I could afford gas and tolls, I could never just run back to my room to grab a forgotten book…and it was worth it. I love driving, and in those early morning hours going through fog or light rain or weak sunshine listening to a favorite song with the window down is as good as it gets. Having such a big distance between school and home really allowed me to leave school at school and home at home and my stress levels went down immensely.
Congratulations on your new job olives!! I am very happy for you!
My father had a commute almost this long for decades. (He took a bus.)
Congratulations.
More congrats.
I too took a job that was very exciting for me, but it was a two-hour commute each way. I ended up renting a room from a towns-person, so I only drive four hours a week. It helped that my dean allowed me to arrange my schedule so last semester I only had classes Monday through Wednesday, so I was home for supper Wednesday evening.
I thought about commuting, but since I’m in Minnesota, the prospects of driving in always-changing winter weather was too much to consider.
Just thought I’d update. Yesterday was my first day at my new job. I am officially working 4 tens with Wednesday off (switching to a different day on weeks where there’s something important that day.) On work days I’ll be doing 8am to 6pm.
The commute does take about an hour and a half, but yesterday’s commute wasn’t very stressful. I have a cool little GPS app (Waze) that auto-routes me around traffic jams. I got there early and took a walk in the nearby park square. And somehow when I got home around 7:30 I had dinner finished by 8pm.
Today is Wednesday, which I have off. I got my bathroom cleaned and some paperwork done. Having this day off is going to make life so much easier.
So, I don’t think this is going to be so bad. The job itself is going to be amazing. My new boss and I talked strategy for most of the day and inside I’m like, ''I can’t believe I am actually going to get to do all this cool stuff!"
Also, the difference between 1.5 and 2 hours is pretty huge. It’s like 25% or something!
Congratulations on your situation, it sounds pretty sweet.
Congrats! Wednesday is a really good day to have off, because you always either have tomorrow off or you were off yesterday.
Yay! Having a job you actually love would be worth so much to me.
I feel like I’m telling you something you already know, but you know that this isn’t forever. Your husband will finish up his stuff, and you’ll be free to move or figure out a new plan in the future to reduce your car time.
