Companies that push things that don’t work

Optimum sucks. I’m sure most of its customers in the NY/NJ area would agree. I left Fios for Optimum only because the latter offers the Spanish language version of Bein Sports, which often broadcasts different games than the English version. Only mentioning this is case someon asks why I’d be stupid enough to still be a customer.

Anyway, a couple of years ago, Optimum started marketing its streaming service in which customers would be able to stream all cable channel content on their mobile devices. Got a nice e-mail from them telling me to use it. Tried it; never worked. Always cut out or froze. The dozen or so other people that I know tried it with the same results.

Now they claim that I can get wi-fi anywhere. Sure, my phone detects a wi-fi signal almost everywhere. Great! Except the damn signal is always so weak that I can’t get on any website. I have to shut off the wi-fi after the page freezes and start all over on my mobile service.

Why the hell do they promote services that don’t work? In fact, I’d view them a whole lot higher if they never had these services to begin with.

Being a regulated utility is basically a license to print money and spend it on useless shit that doesn’t work with little consequence. CableVision is in this weird spot right now where they’re halfway between being just The Cable Company and trying to actually be an innovative, competitive business. Their cashflow is still large enough that they can afford to fail at everything for the foreseeable future.
