Company Forcing Employees To Donate Their Hard Earned Money

This is the letter they just sent to us. They expect us to believe a frail 90 year old man wrote this. He is so frail he needs assistance with sitting/standing/walking.

Once again it’s time for my annual plea to each of you in connection with the Employee Fund-Raising Campaign. While it’s true each new year brings more challenges to each of us on all fronts, at least we are all fortunate to be able to have the wherewithal to meet our own basic needs. We are all workers, and survivors. We strive to do a better job both at work and at living, and the payback is the success we achieve through all of our combined efforts working together and helping each other.

But try to imagine if there weren’t an (company name) to provide steady employment, workplace programs and a myriad of benefits, or XXX to pitch in when the needs arise. Can you fathom the degree of helplessness, maybe hopelessness we’d feel? Then you can imagine the despair, suffering and tragedy of our fellow human beings – men, women and children – who are not so fortunate as we. They make the news almost daily, their sad stories of misfortune, bitter tales of neglect or abuse, and it makes for uncomfortable reading. We feel sorry for them, but by the same token, we’re relieved it isn’t our personal tragedy making the news that day. Yet, for every one story that grabs our attention and sympathy, there are hundreds and thousands of untold heartbreaking dramas taking place each day that don’t make the evening news.

And it seems that with each year that passes, there is that much more that needs to be done. Well, we constantly hear that even one person can make a difference, so if we all help, all of us working together can make a big difference! But you have to take the first step. That would be by participating in this year’s (company name) Employee Fund-Raising Campaign which once again encompasses the United Way/Crusade of Mercy (some 450+ worthwhile causes). While anything you give will be very much appreciated, it is my hope you will consider being as generous as possible at this time, because to make your contribution more meaningful, the company will match you dollar-for-dollar. And again this year, special thank-you gifts will be awarded for contributions of $25 or more. We will make a difference!

Please find it within yourself to be as giving as possible when you are contacted and asked to participate in this year’s campaign. Your generosity will be deeply appreciated, by me, and particularly by those in need

I grade that letter a C+. Great last two paragraphs, excellent request, but horrendous detail in the first two paragraphs. It’s about as vague as it could possibly be. “We are all workers, and survivors.” What the hell does that mean? “…who are not so fortunate as we.” Huh? Is that a sentence?

I have no problem with someone writting a letter for an old man to sign. That’s not a big deal, and a pretty common practice. But when you have a recipient pen (or just sign) a request letter, you want some specific details in there about how the money being collected helps him directly.

United Way, get yourself a decent Assistant Director of the Annual Fund. Seriously. This is pathetic.
