They think that doing a good job for a client (which IMHO is the bare minimum expectation) should put them in line for the next promotion.

And if your experience paralells mine, they will most likely BE the ones promoted. Because they expect to be, and because they’ll be angling for one the whole time. The quiet ones who have a lesser opinion of themselves, and what they accomplished don’t tend to get as far.

If you want to be more than one of those bitter guys who always complain about how hard they work while less competant people get ahead, you need to make sure that not only does everyone know how talented you are, you need to make it known that you are talented at doing the job above yours.
