Computer CD player question

My computer has 2 cd rom drives. The top one is a read/write and the bottom is just read. I usually listen to cd’s using the top one but last night when I put a cd in, no sound came out. The cd player opens up on the desktop and the counter starts as if the cd is playing but no music comes out. I tried the cd in the bottom player and it worked. Could I have messed up my settings for that drive? If so, how do I restore them?

Thanks

Check your mixer. Sounds like you just muted the CDAudio on that drive. Not a big deal. With my machine, I have 1 drive hooked into CD Audio on my sound card, and the other CD drive hooked into the Auxilliary port on the sound card. However, only one or the other can be activated at once. If yours is the same way, perhaps it switched. Anyway, just check your mixer settings for your sound card.

I’d tell ya but I’m busy trying to put these pants on my head and arms…

Head goes through the zipper, right?

Jman has this one pretty close. In many situations with two CD drives only one plays CD audio because the sound card only accepts one CD Audio cable.

Look at the back of your CD drives. You will see a power cable and a data (ribbon) cable running to both. However, I bet only one drive on your system has an audio cable running from your CD drive to your sound card. This is what allows CD Audio to play.

If, like Jman, your audio card has two ports for CD audio then you can get a cable (very cheap…probably get one at Radio Shack) to plug the second CD drive in. Otherwise you have to buy a sound card with this capability or just live with it. Most people just live with it.

You can move the cable to either CD drive BTW. Easy to do and your computer won’t care or know the difference. If you prefer the other drive to play CD Audio then go ahead and switch the cable.

FYI: Your computer tries to play the CD reagrdless of which drive it’s in since the computer has no idea which drive has a cable attached for CD-Audio. This is normal so no worries there.

I can’t answer yet as Im too busy trying to read your mind to find out what kind of computer you have. Let’s see, how about a Mac? No? Hmmm.
