I am having a problem with my computer. I’m trying to defrag it and it keeps coming up that it won’t run because of a cyclical error. Someone has told me that the reason this happens is because of the fact that I drag and drop files instead of cutting and pasting them (the files in questions are used in a program called MP3 DJ). Can anyone tell me if this is true or just a line? Is there another reason why you’d be getting a cyclical error? Thanks guys.
A ‘cyclical’ error? Are you sure it’s not a CRC error? (CRC stands for ‘cyclical redundancy check’). Basically a CRC error means the data on the disk is corrupted. Sounds to me like the defragger moved a block off data, then did a CRC on it to make sure the block was readable and unchanged, and that failed. That would indicate a bad sector on your hard drive.
You need to run a disk utility that checks your hard drive for bad sectors and marks them as bad so they won’t be used by the OS. But be warned that the appearance of bad sectors can indicate a hard drive that is failing.
I don’t buy the drag-and-drop thing.
I’ll echo what Sam said. You probably have some bad blocks, and the CRC is the way such things are detected.
Also, though I’m not a Windows person (I assume that’s your system), I can’t see how it would make a difference, in the interface, how you copy files around. Ultimately it boils down to some low-level operating system calls, “copy file F to disk D, subdirectory SD”, which is going to result in the same disk activity regardless of how it was triggered by the user.
So I say it’s “just a line” someone’s feeding you.
Hi Guys. Thanks. That’s what I thought too. I’m giving this thread one bump just to see if the dopers who missed it over the weekend might have any other theories.
If you keep receiving a message like, “restarting due to drive read activity” or something similar, then you probably need to temporarily turn off your virus scanner, or any other program that periodically reads from the disk.
Agree; whoever fed this line should be tarred, feathered and given a gift subscription to the SDMB.
Of those three, which is the worst punishment?
