Oops.
Tripped over a wire.
Sorry.
You can look on Google News from before today and see that there are multiple times that United Airlines has had serious glitches that have caused ground flights. Apparently their computer system is ancient and needs to be updated.
NYSE has also had computer glitches before that have caused some issues, including some stops in trading, although today’s might be worse than others before.
I can’t find if WSJ.com has had similar issues in the past, but if you were a hacker, would WSJ.com be who you’d go after? It seems a low value target. I could see hackers go after it for whatever specific reason, but not as part of a coordinated attack with United and NYSE.
Weird coincidences, but I don’t think it’s time to panic yet.
Server problem. All of it. We’ve called Oracle and they’re sending some guys over.
Continental Airlines was also down yesterday. Maybe they are connected to United or use the same software/hardware.
Probably all a coincidence. Things happen. Where I work one of the system administrators made a small change to one of the servers. Suddenly all the servers started messing up. He thought that it was his fault for making the small change. Actually it was a bigger problems that started at almost the exact same time.
Continental and United merged in 2010. If a computer glitch affects one, it would make sense it would affect the other.
It does seem like an odd coincidence and some people are saying that China may be behind it. If it is hackers it seems like they could have done much worse things, but I suppose it could be a dry run to test capabilities.
Then again, it could easily be just a coincidence.
Game on my phone has been down all day, too. Didn’t know farming games were so important that hackers lumped them in with the NYSE and major airlines.
Oh,** Marley**!!
Its been suggested that with China’s little “crash” that these actions would limit the “cashing out” of investments in China and prevent those funds from investing in other investments and/or markets. If that’s true, then that’s an Attack.
If Its Proven True (unproven as of yet)… while it isn’t “missile-launch” worthy, it IS “devolve market access to hard-line stand alone DOS terminals ONLY” worthy… coupled with “paper trades on-floor in addition to that ONLY” worthy.
Sure that means ETrade becomes ByeByeTrade… but that would still be a tad better than hearing “I sure hope your certificates are as soft as Charmin or make good kindling…”
Anonymous rumors, for what it’s worth.
The Continental brand hasn’t existed since 2011. They’ve been hard down for 4 years now.
The single combined brand is “United” and has been since late 2011. Although the combined paint job and top management are more reminiscent of pre-merger Continental than they are of pre-merger United.
