Computer Issues

I am trying to set up my computer such that I can have a default folder for EVERYTHING I save as the Desktop. I want to be able to save on ANY application and it automatically takes me to the Desktop (not ‘My Documents’). At the moment, I have to change the default folder individually for each program. Usually, this is ‘My Documents’. Can anyone help? I have searched the Control Panel but cannot seem to find anything.

Thank you.

Find the TweakUI for your version of Windows. There’s something in there that lets you set the location of all kinds of special Windows folders–My Documents, My Pictures, and about 20 others.

(While TweakUI is unofficial, the different versions are all written by bona fide Microsoft programmers, so they’re safe if you know what you’re doing.)

Why would you want to save everything to the desktop?

Heartily seconded; TweakUI does about a million great things. You can get it from this page at Annoyances.org, among other places.

I believe the special folder locations are under the “My Computer” tab.

I’m with Urban Ranger, though - why would you want to save everything on the desktop?

I don’t want to save everything to the desktop. However, I do have links to all my important files on the desktop. Therefore, when I pull down the drop down menu, want to be able to click on the relevant file straight away without having to click on desktop, click away from the drop down menu, click on it again and then select the file I want. Thanks for your help though. I’ll check out TweakUI.

What version of Windows is this?
