Actually, just computer-knowledeable people are fine.
When I leave on my computer for long periods of time (which is all the time…sorry), sometime the image inside the window starts "bouncing " up and down really fast if I put the cursor in the window. If I move the cursor outside the window, it stops bouncing. Back in, bounces again.
I reboot, and it usually solves the problem for another two to three days (during which time my comp is on…you get the picture). But last night it did it again after only about an hour. Someone I talked to says it might be something to do with the video card? I have no idea what video card I have or even what memory thingy-size-whatever computer I have ( my boyfriend built it). But I do know I have Windows 2000, if that makes a difference.
I regularly defrag 2-3 times a week, and do a ScanDisk thing once a week. I also do that file cleaning thing also (same time as the defragging).
Thanks for not laughing (too hard) at my computer-illiteracy.
During use a computer swaps info into and out of memory. Video cards also have memory and do the same thing. Some programs, however, aren’t so good about cleaning up after themselves. After awhile memory can get used but not released and over time this may cause performance issues. Rebooting clears the memory thus fixing your problem.
You might consider updating your video card drivers but if you don’t know what your video card is that’ll be problematical.
Also, no need to defrag 2-3 times a week. Once every 6 months is usually plenty unless you really hammer your system by installing and uninstalling programs as well as copying loads of files onto and off of the hard drive.
You can likewise ease up on the scandisk as well. Indeed, you can skip it altogether unless you experience problems but if you want to be proactive then once every 3-4 months should be fine.
It’s not so much that any of these things hurts your PC (although they needlessly thrash your hard drive) but they do waste time.
You can do the file cleaning thing as often as you like.
I would say a video card problem; simply reseating the card might even fix it (take the card out and put it straight back in again (with the power turned off!)).
There is also just the remotest of chances that there is something wrong with the mouse or mouse driver (especially if it’s a scroll wheel type) - does the problem only occur with windows that have a vertical scroll bar or is it any kind of window?
Hmm. I’ve never noticed about the scroll bar or not. I’ll try to take notice the next time. I will also find out about the video card type.
Thanks about the defrag/disk scan advice, but I do a lot of saving and deleting files and what not. It doesn’t matter to me about time; I have a lot of time.
Thank you, Whack-A-Mole and Mangetout.
