computer problem: keep losing internet

I find that I have to repeatedly restart my computer when I go on-line or else I’m faced with the much hated “this page can not be displayed” message.

Typical scenario: I turn on my computer, go online, then after fifteen minutes or so, the computer behaves as if it is working offline even though it is supposedly connected. If I disconnect and then reconnect, none of the pages load; all I get is “the page can not be displayed”. In order to go back on the internet for some any length of time, I have to restart my computer. And the cycle continues.

Anyone have ideas of what’s causing this and what to do about it?

You can try uninstalling then reinstalling your ISP software. Also be sure you have the lastest drivers for your modem. Perhaps a bit more information about your system (ISP, OS, etc.) might help here.

I have earthlink, Q.E.D. How would I know if I need the latest modems?

No, no. Not the the latest modem, the latest modem driver. Visit the homepage of your modem manufacturer and see if they have newer drivers for your particular modem you can download. I’m assumming you’re on a dialup, but more info would be helpful, as I said earlier. At least tell us your Operating System and version.

Also go to your ISPs homepage and see if they have an FAQ. There might be a known issue they’re addressed there.

If you are using Windows 95 thru WinME , not sure about the others

go to start /run/ and type winipcfg in the dialog box and hit enter

then when the program box comes up , hit release all , and then renew all

that should let you do what you have been doing when you reboot ,without having to reboot.

Thing about internet though

Drivers may help , but you never said if you were on dial up or highspeed.

Some times during the day , you will get sporadic internet outages , specifically between 5 and 9 pm. Its just like the freeway , when its packed your data may be routing through some very far off places and you are timing out.

Declan

I have seen something like this a couple times. Turns out it was an older version of netscape crashing, but leaving a process running. Had to do a CNTL-ALT-DEL and end all the zombie netscape processes, then start it up again., all was fine for a while.

I upgraded to mozilla, problem solved.

Mine does the same thing.
Part of it is my connection.
We live in the country and have a noisy connection . I’ve had it checked out several times. It is good for a while but it just happens again.
I usually go back a page, minimize, disconnect my internet connection then reconnect. Then maximize and I’m ok for a while.
BTW I have win 95.

As usual for me to ask, what kind of computer is this? What kind of operating system?

Mine used to do this but it was because the phone jack was full of crud from the pacific ocean air.
