Computer problems: help yer friendly moderator out!

Yes, you can undo a restore if you don’t like the results. It’s a neat feature.

So is it weird that I can only select dates in June?

Did you try clicking the back arrow at the top left corner of the calendar? You should be able to scroll back through the months.

I tried, and it won’t scroll back to May.

Screw it. I’m going to click “next”, cause that’s just the kind of reckless guy I am.

Uh, if you don’t hear from me for a week, you know what happened.

Huh. I can go back as far as May 10. Oh well, use the farthest one back that you can, and hope that was before the problem started.

With Restore, you can set a date whenever you want, of course, you have to let it know that first …

It sounds like a registry setting got changed. Either that or your ISP changed it’s DNS setting. Both of these happened to me once.

Try Restore first & when you use it you have to reinstall any programs that you installed after the date of the restore you choose…

How about your winsock?
You might want to scroll to the bottom of this page and use the fix for Windows XP. Worth a shot?

Daizy

Skip that. I just learned how to read today…please forgive me. If you’re able to surf the net, it won’t be your winsock. :o

Are these the only apps that won’t run?

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for your restore. Do know that it’s completely reversible. Not nearly as frightful as it sounds.

Nor is using the XP CD for a repair, if that’s what you choose to do…we can most certainly walk you though that.

Daizy

Well, the restore worked. My Yahoo messenger works again, ICQ still craps out, MSN Messenger still won’t log in, and IE still won’t display secure sites.

And handy’s right: my default restore range was probably set up too short. Grrrrr.

Any other suggestions?

Have you tried to Create a New User Profile?

In certain situations, you may not be able to browse secure sites if your Windows user profile is damaged. To troubleshoot, log on to the computer as another user and try to connect to a secure Web site. If you can connect to secure Web sites when you are logged in as a different user, this may indicate that your user profile is corrupted. In this situation, back up the information and settings that you want from your profile (for example, the My Documents and Favorites folders), and then delete the damaged profile. To delete a user profile:
Log on to the computer as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.

Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.

Click the Advanced tab, and then under User Profiles, click Settings.

In the Profiles stored on this computer list, click the user profile that you want to delete, and then click Delete.

Click Yes when you are prompted to confirm the deletion.

Click OK, click OK, and then quit Control Panel.

Log off the computer as Administrator, and then log on as the user.

Windows creates a new profile for the user.

Verify that Your Computer Is Using 128-Bit Encryption

In Internet Explorer, on the Help menu, click About Internet Explorer.

The level of encryption on your computer appears next to the words Cipher Strength.

Verify that the Cipher Strength value appears as 128-bit.

Click OK.

Delete Temporary Internet Files

Start Internet Explorer.

On the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and then click the General tab.

Under Temporary Internet Files, click Delete Cookies.

Click OK when you are prompted to confirm the deletion.

Click Delete Files.

Click OK when you are prompted to confirm the deletion.

Under History, click Clear History.

Click Yes when you are prompted to delete your history of visited Web sites.

Click OK.

Verify that the Microsoft Cryptographic Services Service Is Started

To verify that the Cryptographic Services service is started (and to start it if it is not):

Click Start, and then click Run.

In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.

At the command prompt, type net start cryptsvc, and then press <ENTER>.

Type exit to quit Command Prompt.

That should give you somewhere to start anyhow.

Daizy, you’re a GENIUS!

I created a new user, and now I can connect to secure sites again. Woo!

OK, so now I have to back up the “My documents” directory somewhere? Like, on my D drive?

What if I just copy that entire directory to the new user profile?

Well, you should be able to share your “My Documents” file folder. I believe you can do this by right-clicking (sorry, I’m at work and have W2K Pro here). Then you should be able to access your old “My Documents” from your new profile. Should be under “Shared Documents” and “Coldfire’s Documents”. Then it’s a simple cut and paste job from there to get them into your new “My Documents”. Did that make sense? I think it did…

I hope it did!

Well, that’s absolutely fabulous news Coldfire! Congratulations.
So glad to hear you got it sorted.
And yes, moving your My Documents contents, should be as simple as a copy and paste.

Again… congratulations.

Daizy

Well, DAMMIT.

The new profile worked just fine. For a day. For some reason, it too is unable to access secure sites all of a sudden. What the HELL is wrong with my damned PC?

I’m getting a new one in January, but until then, it has to do the job, and that includes accessing secure sites. And I’d prefere to do so without a reinstall!

My messengers (both Yahoo and MSN) work again. I guess that’s a bonus.

Oh, another thing. My Outlook now doesn’t display all the nifty folders I created under the old profile. I want to make the new profile use the same settings for Outlook as the old, but how? Of course, the MS knowledge database doesn’t provide an answer, or I can’t find it.

But mostly, I want to know what the heck is up with that secure sites issue. Grrr.

Thanks in advance.

And of course, the last restore point is right before I created the new user profile, which took tons of work all in all. That’ll teach me to create a restore point as soon as the fucking thing works properly.

Coldfire, did you go through the rest of my suggestions as well? It’s truly a crap shoot, I know, but worth the effort.

Daizy

Possible solution from the MS knowledgebase:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q259537

Thanks, I’ll try that tonight, QED. Daizy, if all else fails, I’ll try the rest of those suggestions too.

What a mess. But thanks for the help guys, it’s greatly appreciated.
